2Mu Busy Bee News
Week of April 8, 2019
- As readers, we read and discussed the story Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend. We focused on learning more about story characters by studying their words, actions, and thoughts.
- To make a Text-to Self Connection, we made our own kites adding three wishes ~ one wish on each kite tail. Our kites with wishes are flying high in our class!
- We also self-reflected on our reading skills and noted on a post-it note one of the three areas ~ fluency, Stop and Jot, or figurative language ~ we felt we need to work more on improving as a reader.
- Then, we worked with a partner from our reading "Book Club" group to come up with a plan on how we can meet our goals to enhance our reading skills. During Reading, we worked with our partner to practice and enhance our skills on the area we noted as an area of focus.
- To reinforce our vocabulary skills, we reviewed homophones ~ words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings. For example: Hair and Hare. We each got to pick a homophone that we liked or learned about during our lesson. Then, we wrote and drew and illustration for or homograph on an umbrella shape for our Second Grade bulletin board display. During your next visit to Lizzy Haddon, be sure to check out our Umbrella Homographs displayed in the hall.
Writers' Workshop~
- As writers, we wrote a Small Moment story to help us remember all the key elements of the personal narrative. The writing sample also serves as a good tool to see how much we have grown as writers.
- We also wrote a few journal entries into our Second Grade Scrap book ~ our favorite one being all about our Arbor Day Celebration!
- During Grammar, we learned more about writing contractions. We discussed and practiced writing a contraction by including an apostrophe when combining two words. We practiced knowing where to write the apostrophe ~ the apostrophe replaces the letters we removed when combining two words.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematicians, we learned more about shapes. We learned how some polygons can have a right angle. You can determine if a polygon has a right angle id you can draw a perfect square in one corner. Another way you can determine a right angle is to use the edge of a piece of paper to see if the corner of the shape is square.
- We learned a new game called Shape Capture. To play, a set of shapes is placed into the center of the group. Then, each player takes a turn to select a card from the pile and the card names certain polygon attributes. When its a players turn, they look through the pile of shapes and collect all the shapes that have the attributes on their selected card.
- We also explored different sizes if the same shape. We created different sized triangles using baggie ties and strays. Then we were challenged to create a triangle that had 1 right angle.
- To help us learn more about classifying and describing different shapes, we completed an Open Response. Two siblings were trying to draw up a plan for a garden. Juan wanted a quadrilateral with 4 right angles, while Linda wanted to design a quadrilateral garden with only two right angles. First, we had to sketch each person's garden. Then, we had look at all the sketches we made for Linda's idea and choose which drawing worked best for Linda's garden design. Finally, we had to write the reason we thought the design we created worked for Linda's idea. Our reasons included that the shape was a quadrilateral with 4 sides and 2 right angles. We also noted that the polygon was closed and had straight lines.
Science~
- As Geologists, we examined our clay beans and determined they harden enough to be painted...stay tuned for our finished clay products.
Social Studies~
- We completed a Scholastic News about Gum. Do you get upset when you step on gum? Well, Anna Bullus decided to make a "gum drop" container for people to deposit their gum. Most importantly, she made the gum drop container out of recycled gum!! Imagine that!!
Other Activities~
- We celebrated Arbor Day by planting an Oak-Willow Tree on Lizzy Haddon grounds. The Shade Tree Commission gave us a bit of the history behind Arbor Day. They also read the official Arbor Day Proclamation. Also, we all shouted "Kuzzah!" as directed by the Quaker who told us that was a way to say "show appreciation and joy" to the commission representatives. We even got to add a little soil to the tree...we look forward to watching the tree grow with us!
- "2Mu Springs Into Action"...We are all set to do lots of good deeds to add to our Spring Scenery!
