## Important Reminders!

1. Report cards will be sent home this Monday, November 16th at the end of the day.

2. This Wednesday, November 18th is a LATE START.

3. This Wednesday is also PICTURE RETAKE DAY from 1-3pm

## This Week in Math...

Last week we worked hard to understand not only how to multiply whole numbers and fractions, but what this looks like in real life. We talked about how when you need to find 2/3 of 5 for example, "of" is the word that signals multiplication. It is hard for students to understand that when we multiply fractions, the product is smaller than the factor that we started with. It is crucial that you check in with your child to make sure they are understanding the new material that we are covering!

Skills we will work on this week include:

-Simplifying the multiplication process

-Multiplying mixed numbers (most likely two days)

-Relating addition and multiplication of fractions (most likely two days)

Remember to look for corrected homework in Friday Folders! I will be correcting about 3-5 questions on each homework assignment in order to provide you and your child with feedback on how they are doing with each concept.

**Please remember that topics are subject to change depending on the pace at which we master each new concept.

## "Wonder" is Underway in Reading!

Hopefully you've all heard that we've started reading "Wonder" by Raquel J. Palacio in class. You've probably also heard that this book has caused me to cry (twice already) while I'm in the middle of reading it to the class (I blame being pregnant! Hahah!). This book is full of hard-to-swallow scenes in which the main character, August, who has an extreme facial deformity, is experiencing how hard it is to go to a mainstream school. I strongly encourage you to talk about this book with your child and have meaningful conversations with them about accepting and loving others for who they are.

Some reading strategies we will work on this week include:

-Watching for the main character to act in surprising ways and thinking about what this reveals about the character

-Think about what we can learn from objects that the main character holds close

-Using precise and exact words to describe character action

-Search for patterns in our notes to confirm theories we have about the main character

Be sure to ask your child how they are doing with their weekly letters, and ask to see their Reader's Notebook if you have not seen it lately!

*Please remember that your child should be reading for at least 30 minutes, 5 times per week. Their reading log should be filled out and signed by you frequently!

## Words Their Way - Spelling

Due to the short week we have before Thanksgiving, there will not be new spelling words assigned until after we return from Thanksgiving break on Monday, November 30th.

## What's New in Writing?

We're still working on drafting our Realistic Fiction stories and they're coming along great!

This week in writing we will:

-Rewrite leads to reflect the importance of our stories

-Writing scenes to show time and place

-Crafting endings to relate to our story’s real message or heart and resolve the struggle

-Meeting with partners to share our story progress and receive feedback
