Thoughts From a Teacher....
Positive Paths: What’s Up With Good Habits—The Simple Path
It seems pretty obvious that if you are a student, you just do the work. However, as a teacher and a lifelong learner, and a recent student myself, I have found that it is sometimes a bit more difficult and frustrating than just “doing the work” in class. I know from recent personal experiences getting a Master's Degree that study habits are hard at times to form and keep. I have found that some simple tips will take a big chunk out of feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and anxious about school now in the post-COVID mixed world of in-person and online learning. You must form good habits.
First, you really need to make a plan to attack the daily schedule with logic. Most teachers use a combination of online and actual document-based work assignments. Every teacher differs a bit, and this reflects real-life learning. In a career or job, you must always be shifting and learning daily new challenges in the workplace. You can create your own template and keep that consistent for yourself. Don’t expect identical teaching styles from your teachers.
One of my sincerest pieces of advice is to look at each individual class daily during and after school and take handwritten notes during each class including not only lecture points. Be sure to copy down due dates either from the Google Classroom schedules or the dry-erase board or classroom screens. Keep these daily notes in a binder or an “agenda” notebook specifically for your personal organization. I know we all utilize cell phones now, but hey, really? What if you lose your phone or it dies? Also, there is a policy of no cell phones in most schools, so paper works everywhere all the time. Nothing replaces the brain-body connection of handwritten notes and reminders located in something that is used daily.
Complete the closest due date assignments first–that means when your teacher provides time in class for the work, even if it is not due that day, do it. By doing as much of the work you can do in class –you are ahead already for the week. Try very hard to be consistent with doing the work in day in class, submitting the work before you leave for the day if at all possible. Participate verbally by asking questions for clarification. A lot of time, we as teachers might assume you understand a concept you actually do not. Ask for help. Also, we all need rewards. Create a rewards system for yourself to keep yourself accountable and motivated. AND take care of yourself by getting enough sleep and nutrition. Elective Fair
Dear Parents and Students,
We are excited to announce that Arkansas Arts Academy (AAA) will host an Elective Fair on April 5th in which all AAA high school elective class options for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year will be on display from 1:40 pm to 4:00 pm. This event will provide all current 6th thru 11th-grade students with the opportunity to explore AAA high school arts programming and see performances, products and materials used in the classes. Students will spend designated time at the elective fair on April 5th with the 6th-grade students arriving at the upper campus at 8:30 in the morning and will depart at 9:20 to return to the EMS campus.
The AAA Elective Fair allows students to learn more about the many art offerings at the high school and explore the various music, dance, theater, culinary, fashion, and visual arts courses. Students will have the chance to meet with teachers and ask any questions they may have about the courses.
At the end of the Elective Fair, we provide all students with an interest survey form. This will allow students to express their interests and preferences in the various art courses offered at our school. This survey will also assist the high school in understanding the needs and interests of our students and how many potential sections we should offer each class. Our desire at AAA is to provide students with the arts offerings they find relevant and engaging.
Parents and new students can visit the elective fair from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. This extended time will allow parents to learn more about the arts programming offered at our high school and our Arts Pathways Program*. Parents can meet with teachers and current students and ask any questions they may have about the courses. We encourage all parents to attend the elective fair and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the arts programming at AAA high school
*Arts Pathways Program
AAA is thrilled to announce the launch of our new Arts Pathways Program, which offers students the opportunity to pursue their passion for the arts through a focused and comprehensive course of study. The Arts Pathways Program is designed to provide students with a unique and engaging experience in the arts, allowing them to explore and develop their talents and interests through various specialized courses. Students can choose from four pathways: Music, Performing, Visual Arts, and Career and Technical Arts.
The Music Pathway offers instrumental and vocal music courses, music theory, and music technology. Students in this pathway can develop their skills in various musical genres and have the opportunity to participate in various musical ensembles, such as the jazz band and the rockhoppers.
The Performing arts pathway combines dance and theatre studies to offer a comprehensive curriculum in performing arts. This pathway provides opportunities to develop skills through various courses and productions. The dance program includes ballet, jazz, and modern dance studies, where students can develop their technique, choreography, and performance skills. Theatre studies include acting, improvisation, technical theatre, and costuming courses. Students can focus on one area or study dance and theatre.
The Visual Arts Pathway offers drawing, painting, sculpture, and graphic design courses. Students in this pathway can develop their skills in various media and have the opportunity to showcase their work in various art exhibitions and community events.
The Arts Pathways Program aims to provide students with a focused and comprehensive course of study in the arts. The program allows students to immerse themselves in their chosen field and develop a strong foundation in their area of interest. Students who complete the Arts Pathways Program are recognized with a special cord at graduation, indicating their achievement and dedication to their chosen field of study. The cord system serves to acknowledge and celebrate students' accomplishments and provides a tangible reminder of their time and commitment to the arts.
Parents and new students can visit the elective fair from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. This will provide an excellent opportunity for parents to learn more about the arts programming offered at our school and the Arts Pathways Program. The parent will be able to meet with teachers and current students in the arts programs and ask any questions they may have about the courses. We encourage all parents to attend the elective fair and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the arts programming at our school.
We will set up a booth for incoming 7th-grade parents and students to learn more about the upper campus. The administration will be on-site to address your concerns and answer any questions.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.
