Our Viking Character Trait for December is Caring.
In the spirit of caring, we are offering an opportunity to share joy with families in our own community who may not be able to buy gifts for their children this Christmas. We are supporting the LV Police Department’s Blue Santa outreach program. Students can bring new toys to our front office until Thursday, December 14. We appreciate your support!
Our Lago Vista Clothing Closet will be open on Sunday, December 10 from 2:00 – 4:00pm. The clothing closet is open to all community members, and is located behind our school in Portable 6. If you are unable to come on this day, please let me know and I will be happy to shop there with your student during the school day.
Holidays are not always a happy time for families. I would like to share some suggestions I found that may help your holiday season be a little less stressful and, maybe, even add to your holiday cheer:
American Psychological Association (APA) suggests these tips to help parents effectively manage holiday stress
· 1. Strengthen social connections – We know that strong, supportive relationships help us manage all kinds of challenges. So, we can view the holidays as a time to reconnect with the positive people in our lives. Accepting help and support from those who care about us can help alleviate stress.
· 2. Initiate conversations about the season – It can be helpful to have conversations with our kids about the variety of different holiday traditions our families, friends and others may celebrate.
· 3. Set expectations – It is helpful to set realistic expectations for gifts and holiday activities. Depending on a child's age, we can use this opportunity to teach kids about the value of money and responsible spending. We need to remember to pare down our own expectations, too. Instead of trying to take on everything, we need to identify the most important holiday tasks and take small concrete steps to accomplish them.
· 4. Keep things in perspective – The holiday season is short. There will be time after the holiday season to follow up or do more of things we’ve overlooked or did not have the time to do during the holidays.
· 5. Take care of yourself – It is important that we pay attention to our own needs and feelings during the holiday season. We can find fun, enjoyable and relaxing activities for ourselves and our families. By keeping our minds and bodies healthy, we are primed to deal with stressful situations when they arise. Consider cutting back television viewing for kids and getting the family out together for fresh air and a winter walk. Physical activity can help us feel better and sleep well, while reducing stress.
Food for the Soul
“One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don’t clean it up too quickly.” – Andy Rooney
Attendance is Important (Mrs. Davis misses you!)
Please remember that your child is missed when he/she aren't at school. One of the most important things your child can do to achieve academic success is also one of the most basic: going to school every day.
Research has shown that your child's attendance record may be the biggest factor influencing his/her academic success.
Your commitment to attendance sends a message to your child that education is a priority for your family, going to school is a critical part of educational success, and that it's important to take your responsibilities seriously - including going to school.
