Long Beach Alumni Newsletter
Summer 2020
To Our Newest Alumni; the Class of 2020,
Although your school year did not go as planned, your commitment and dedication to self, others, and the Long Beach community never wavered. You actively participated in your classes, advocated for your graduation, and stayed home. You've made many sacrifices this spring-you've socially distanced from friends, missed the opportunity for prom, and you may have even been personally impacted by COVID-19. Some of you have protested civil rights injustices in town, others have stopped to listen and learn. All of you, however, have risen to the occasion, and this steadfast determination will surely serve you well as you move on from Long Beach High School.
To be able to welcome this class into the Long Beach Alumni community is to welcome inspiration, determination, and hard work. Many of you will go off to college or trade school. Some will enter the military and others directly to work. No matter where you go, you will be a representation of the town in which you grew, and we are all excited to see what you become. Always remember that there's a place for you in Long Beach, and to always have a little sand in your shoes.
Warmly,
Your Fellow Alumni

Salvatore (Sal) Canepa, Class of 1991
Marvin McMoore, Class of 2011
Kristina (Tina) King, Class of 2007
Salvatore (Sal) Canepa, Class of 1991
When Sal isn't working, you can find him baking, spending time with his family, and attending Broadway show after Broadway show. He has always been actively involved in the arts. During high school, Sal participated in band, chorus, Dixieland band, stage band, yearbook committe, and several musical productions. He has been choreographer and musical director for many community theatre productions, and taught dance at "The Dance Loft" in Long Beach.
When asked to reflect on his time at LBHS, Sal can't believe the stamina he had. After a full day of classes, and extracurriculars, he would return to school in the evenings for practice or rehearsal. He even held a job at Shore Park Pharmacy! He feels very lucky to have had supportive teachers and made lifelong friends. He wouldn't trade his experience for anything!
Marvin McMoore, Class of 2011
His educational and professional background lends itself to leadership in this area. Marvin earned a BA in political science from Northeastern University and a Master's in election and campaign management from Fordham University. Previous jobs include: Director of Policy at the Office of the Nassau County Comptroller, Director of Community Development at the City of Long Beach, Research Assistant at the Kostas Center for Homeland Security, and National President of the College Democrats of America.
When asked to reflect on his time at Long Beach High School, Marvin explains that his work overseeing Class Olympics for 4 years helped him to find his passion for organization and community development. Marvin was also the President of Student Organization, President of the African American Club, participated in Varsity wrestling, chamber orchestra, select choir, The Morning Show and was crowned homecoming king.
Marvin recently returned from Indiana where he worked for the Pete Buttigieg campaign as the National Young Engagement and Regional Political Director. Now that he is back home, he will use his personal and professional experiences to lead the Long Beach United for Racial Equity group. Kristina (Tina) King, Class of 2007
Tina graduated from Molloy in 2012 as a registered nurse, and immediately started working at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York. She is currently an RN2 on the clinical ladder and has acted as a charge nurse and preceptor to nursing students and new staff nurses. She is on the Unit Based Council and Medication Safety Committee as well.
In March, upon hearing that her hospital was in dire need of PPE, Tina took to social media to secure over 150 face masks and boxes of gloves for her nursing unit. She made personal pick ups and encouraged non-essential business to donate to local hospitals.
At the height of the pandemic, Tina was working 4 twelve and a half hour shits per week, instead of the normal 3. Knowing how terrified her COVID-19 patients were, Tina supported them when their families were not allowed to be by their sides. She held phones and I-pads up so her patients could communicate with loved ones. According to Tina, she will carry those moments with her for the rest of her life. To lift her spirits, family and friends took to the streets and surprised Tina with a well-deserved car parade to thank her for the selfless work she was doing.
Tina is presently engaged, lives in Point Lookout, and is looking forward to a fall 2021 wedding!
