Pine News Update
April 12
Progress
This week we enjoyed 25 minutes of independent reading each day, a more organized way to line up, and great discussions about natural resources, among others. Read on to find out more.
Reading
As a whole class, we are now reading for 25 minutes each day. We also discussed the organization of our library. We looked at books that children were unsure where to return to our library. We talked about what kinds of books they were. When we read a book about the Milky Way Galaxy, Malia said, "It should go in the space bin." It turns out we used to have a space bin, but don't any longer. Isa said, "Well, space is a kind of science, so we could put it in the science bin."
Writing
The Pines are imagining some great characters as they plan their stories. We have used webs to brainstorm ideas for characters. This coming week we will place our characters in settings and list the problems they could encounter there.
Writing and Integrated Curriculum
We noticed that children know a lot about natural resources from a game that many of them play called Minecraft. As we are learning about natural resources that we depend on, we asked them to reflect on their learning from this game. Children who are not familiar with the game were asked to summarize their learning from our class.
Math
We continued working with tens and ones this week. Students solve story problems involving tens and ones. Students also played a game called "Collect 50", which helped them practice counting by tens and ones. This week we will record the turns of "Collect 50" on the open number line.
Please find extra practice working with tens and ones below. You might print them out or re-write them on another sheet of paper.
