Mrs. Smith's 1st Grade News

May 20, 2016

If you have not considered Summer School for your child, you may want to give it a try. In my opinion and past experience, students can regress over the summer months unless they are engaged in reading and problem solving activities daily. Please let me know if you need enrollment form.

Zoo & Field Day Pictures

**MORE PICTURES WERE ADDED THIS WEEK!*** You should have received an email from Shutterfly with a link to our classroom site. This is where I uploaded pictures from our field trip to the zoo, as well as pictures from field day. If you have pictures you would like added please send them my way. Enjoy the pictures!

What We Learned:

Math Workshop

This week we finished up our fraction topic by making a fraction friend and describing it and a "write around the room" activity. We also began reviewing place value (ones, tens, hundreds). We practiced adding hundreds flats and 100 more and less.

Readers Workshop

We explored different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk and learned what fractured fairy tales are. We worked in our new book clubs and discussed the different versions of the tale. We looked at the reader's theatre script for our tales.

Writers Workshop

This week we have been busy editing our last few pieces and are beginning to publish our favorite one.

We have learned many fascinating facts about our solar system. We have talked about the sun, moon, rotate, revolve, orbit, and the four inner planets. Ask your child to tell you the names of the inner planets and a fact about each one. Next week we will learn about the outer planets.
