School Staff Spotlight!
Every month we will shine the spotlight on a teacher or staff member of Arcado. This month, we will hear from one of Arcado's Reading Recovey Teachers, Dr. Sally Duerr. Dr. Duerr has been part of the Arcado community for over 24 years.
What or who inspired you to become a teacher?
My dad was the assistant superintendent of schools in Richmond, Virginia. I would always visit him in his office and it was filled with books, as he was in charge of curriculum. I loved looking at the books and reading them when I could. My mom taught for 3 months, then stayed home with us. She taught me all about plants, flowers, insects, birds, everything in nature. He and my mom were my first and best teachers.
If you were not a teacher, you would be? A doctor, have always found medical things fascinating.
What was your first job? My first job was a tennis instructor for the city of Richmond department of parks and recreation
Do you have a personal motto or favorite quote?
Practice makes permanent.
What are your other hobbies?I have an embroidery machine and love to monogram and applique clothes for my grandchildren.
Tell us about your bookmobile, and how can we help? The book mobile was started 15 or so years ago by Dyanne Beavin and me. We knew there was a whole population of children who had no access to books during the summer months. We started with a few cardboard boxes of books from our basements,
and it has grown to many plastic tubs of books stored in my garage. I have received books from current and retired teachers, teachers formerly at Arcado, and parents who know about our summer project. We go every Wednesday during the summer unless it rains. Students may come and check out as many books as they can carry. We also provide the middle and high
school required reading books for their summer reading. As far as help, we need adult bodies to man the site during the summer. Some weeks, I am gone
to visit grandchildren. As this is my last year, I need someone to take it over.
Favorite children's book: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate diCamillo
What message would you most like to share with Arcado parents and students? Learning to read and reading to learn are "must" skills. It takes such a little bit of time nightly to listen to a child read and to engage in a discussion about the book. It's never too early to start. Children who have lots of lap reading continue in their love of reading and learning. Give your children the gift of your time.
