Principal Muñoz's Message:

Week 3 has begun and our Bobcat Leaders are off to a strong start. Many have conducted investigations in our science lab as they grow as inquirers around Properties of Matter. This is a standard that all our K-5 students are learning this six weeks. Our students are gaining the knowledge from as young as Kinder about how to identify properties of matter by color, size, and shape to our older students that are learning how to test the matter of objects through magnetism and water solubility. We love our scientists!

Thank you parents that have been patient and principled in following the traffic changes for entering our building in the morning and afternoon. Each procedure is designed for the safety of all of our students. Our dismissal is at 3:30 and within 10 minutes we are able to have all students exit in a safe manner.

Please remember parents that we are in a school zone at the campus. This means that cell phones are not to be used while driving through the campus for morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. Please make sure that you are following the speed limit as you enter, drive, and exit our campus. These city laws help ensure the safety of our students. Your attention to these laws is greatly appreciated.

If you need to meet with administration for any reason, please call the school at (210) 898-4210 to schedule an appointment.

Kind regards,

¡Amamos a nuestros científicos!

IB Term of the Week: Principled

Last week we communicated how The International Baccalaureate (IB)© approach applies ten characteristics (known as attributes) to describe an IB learner profile. At Las Palmas, all students, staff and teachers strive to demonstrate the attributes of Inquirer, Thinker, Caring, Balanced, Knowledgeable, Open Minded, Risk taker, Communicator, Reflective and Principled.

This "IB Learner Profile" also demonstrates how the IB approach is about much more than academic success. We desire our students to practice these lifelong skills both at school and at home. Each month we will focus on one attribute. The attribute for August/September is Principled.

Principled learners act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice, and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups, and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them. Students who are PRINCIPLED have a sense of fairness and are honest with themselves and with others. They understand that sometimes there are rules and they follow them. They have an understanding of moral reasoning.

Here are some ideas for teachers and parents/guardians:

  • Involve students in deciding on the class rules and expectations and then ensure that they stick to the ones that have been decided upon.
  • Encourage students to play and work in teams. Discuss with students the qualities of a team player. What sort of person would they want on their team?
  • When a student earns a good score or wins a game, insist that he or she is a well-mannered winner. They might thank their opponent or shake hands with them if it’s appropriate.
  • Don’t change the rules or expectations to make a student feel better. Help students learn how to be a gracious loser. Being a gracious loser is just as important as being a good winner.

Come back next week for more tips on how to encourage your child to be principled!
