Introducing the New Counseling Scheduling System!
Governor's Honors Program
Directions for Completing Your GHP Application
All students who were nominated to participate in the 2017 Governor’s Honors Program will need to complete the Student GCPS GHP nomination form.
You can access the form by going on MVHS website and look for the GHP link under counseling.
Your application must be filled out on the computer. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
Print out TWO copies.
DO NOT staple the pages. You can use a paper clip. Stapled applications will be returned to you.
Your application is due on Thursday, September 15 by 2:10 PM.
Please return your application to the counseling office. DO NOT give it to your teacher.
Late applications will not be accepted.
You are required by GCPS to turn in a folder with your course history and schedule. This will be done for you.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Peterson at (678) 407-7623 or
adrian_peterson@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
Best practice is not to procrastinate. You can turn in your application any day before the deadline.
All communication from the county and state will be done via email. Check your email account regularly.
Visit the GHP website at http://gosa.georgia.gov/governors-honors-program for the latest information.

11th Grade Timeline
Fall Semester
- Maintaining your grades during your junior year is important! Colleges will consider the difficulty of your classes and place emphasis on your performance.
- Now is the time to really focus on your college research. You can look for colleges within Georgia as well as conduct a national college search. Put together a list of your top choices and share with others to determine what’s best for you.
- Talk to your school counselor or adviser about the following:
- Schedules for the PSAT, SAT I and SAT Subject Test, ACT and AP exams. Determine which of these exams would be the best fit for you and register. Remember, you can always change your mind.
- The admissions requirements for the colleges you're interested in. Do your research, and be sure to find out about any additional requirements besides GPA and test scores.
- Visit GAFutures for more information.

9th and 10th Grade Planning: What Parents Need to Know
As your child settles into the high school experience, it’s a great time for him or her to take on new challenges. But your child still needs your help and involvement. Here are some things you can do together to succeed this year.
Fall
Make sure your child meets with the school counselor. Your child should schedule a meeting to talk about college and career options and to choose the most-appropriate classes.
Help your child set goals for the school year. Working toward specific goals helps your child stay motivated and focused.
Make a plan to check in regularly about schoolwork. If you keep up with your child's tests, papers and homework assignments, you can celebrate successes and head off problems as a team. Get homework tips for your child.
Talk about extracurricular activities. Getting involved in clubs and other groups is a great way for your child to identify interests and feel more engaged in school. Read more about the benefits of extracurriculars.
