Kalli Drake to Speak at National NACADA Conference
Kalli Drake was selected to present at the upcoming NACADA National Conference in Cincinnati, OH. Her session is on October 7 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. It is entitled "Moral Neutrality in Advising: Supporting High Achievers and Struggling Students Alike." It introduces the concept of moral neutrality and demonstrates how it can be used to help students overcome challenges and achieve a more well-rounded life balance. Advisors will learn to recognize morally neutral scenarios, to help students identify benefits that serve them in decision-making situations and to advocate for students from this perspective to other faculty and staff. Congratulations, Kalli - we know you will represent UGA incredibly well on the national stage!

Resources Spotlight
Math Peer Mentor Program
The program started after a student communicated with Mo Hendon, the department's Undergraduate Coordinator, that she wished she had a female Math mentor when she initially started as a Math major. Kestrina Sherstha then created the program proposal, mission, vision and objectives in the spring semester. The program development is going at a pretty good pace. At the moment, they are in the process of recruiting mentees.
If there is any advisor who wants to connect to learn more or has experience in building similar peer mentor program in their department, please contact Kestrina at: Kestrina.Shrestha@uga.edu.
More information about the program can be found at: https://www.math.uga.edu/math-peer-mentor-program-mp2
Careers in Education
Are your first year and second year advisees interested in a career in education? The Mary Frances Early College of Education offers programs at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels that lead to teacher certification. In addition to the B.S.Ed. Degrees, the college includes several AB/B.S.Ed. Dual Degrees. If a student’s undergraduate major does not lead to teacher certification, they might consider combining the undergraduate degree with a MAT in a Double Dawgs program that leads to certification at the Master’s degree pay rate. Interested students should visit the webpage: https://coe.uga.edu/academics/degrees
Bits & Pieces
Advisor-Led Discussion Group
With the support of the Office of Academic Advising Services, AACC is working to create a platform for advisors to launch, schedule, and advertise their own discussion groups.
Discussion groups will provide members the opportunity to engage with other professionals in areas such as similar unit types, academic areas, interests, or student populations.
The idea is to create a collaborative space for advisors to ask questions, explore resources, and discuss approaches for advancing the professional development of the wider community of advisors across campus. Each month, chairs will have an opportunity (but not a requirement) to share information from their discussion groups via the Advising Oracle.
Unlike a committee, a discussion group won’t have a fixed set of members. The dates, times, and location will be posted on the OAAS website, and sessions will be open to whomever can make it that day.
