Follow-up Message
Greetings Parents,
Recently, you received a note from Superintendent Pam Baldwin regarding the very serious, but escalating, problem of false threats. In her message, she asked all parents to spend time talking with their children about this issue.
The words we use are important, and it is never too early to think about how we can use our words to build one another up, rather than tearing one another down.
If you are willing to have this conversation with your child, then please look over the following talking points and adjust accordingly for your family.
· Online threats are very common, but spoken words, written words and even gestures can serve as threats.
· Social media threats are never ignored. Students need to be responsible when posting online.
· The things we post online can be searchable for the rest of our lives…leading to many unfortunate long-term consequences.
· Do not assume the privacy settings of your favorite social media platforms will fully protect your identity. Illegal activity can be tracked.
· Please know law enforcement is always involved in a threatening situation. There is no such thing as a threat meant as a joke.
· Issuing a threat against a fellow student or staff member could be reported to law enforcement. The student making the threat could be subjected to criminal charges.
Please know that our school team is available and willing to help in any way – both now and in the future. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this important matter. Together, we will maintain a safe learning environment for all of our children and staff.
