Keeping it R.E.A.L! Respect + Effort + Attitude= Leadership
April 2018
From Our Principal...
It is a very busy semester, with many programs, family nights, book fairs, and fundraisers--we hope to see you at WT for one or more of these fun events. The most important thing at WT, however, is the learning that occurs every day. WT is committed to looking each year at that which works, and that which doesn’t. We search for the right way to deliver instruction and the correct amount of home study. We honor the gifts you bring as supportive families and will be looking at ways to communicate clearly that which you can do to support your child every day--not just at the end of a test, grading period, or school year.
One of those things you can do is be familiar with that which your child is expected to do on a daily basis. This will provide a great support system for your child in this final grading period and help build a pattern of success. Ask your teachers about the routines, expectations, and format of classwork, grading, homework, projects, and daily procedures for the end of the year experiences and assessments.
Homeroom Placements for 2018-19
With that said, it is time to begin next year’s class placements. One of the most important tasks we have as educators is placing students in a classroom. The best placement is with an adult who will create the best environment in which to learn, and one in which a good student community is built. It is a task that we take very seriously, focusing on the creation of balanced, well-matched learning environments. It is the most worthwhile time spent in preparation for a new year. When creating these lists, my promise to you is that each child at West Terrace is treated as an individual. Input from teachers, specialists, and parents is highly considered and appreciated when given.
It is likely that your child will be in a room with many new students, or have a teacher an older sibling did not. You can trust that every child’s needs are considered in these placements and we ask for your support.
As class lists come together, we will continue to check and recheck each list, forming classrooms that contain a balance in gender, learning style, peer relationships, temperament, skills mastered and performance levels. If you feel your child needs special consideration in this placement, please share your thoughts on the following form no later than Monday, April 15. https://goo.gl/forms/iPSJXjuZPBAXGBs53 We are providing this form as an option for parents who wish to share their voice as input in the process of placement. Our goal is to create successful communities of learners. This process is helpful in developing balanced classrooms but cannot be used as a request for specific teachers. We ask that parents focus on their student’s learning styles, abilities, and personality—not on the request for a specific teacher. To honor the placement process, recommendations for a teacher by name are not accepted.
We are grateful for your trust in us to meet the needs of your children when making homeroom assignments, and we value our relationships with our parent community. These classroom assignments for students will be made during the month of April. Depending upon enrollment, some of the teachers may move to a different grade levels. Announcements about new staff will be made as the year progresses. Teacher assignments will be announced for each child on the last report card at the end of the year.
Thank you for the opportunity to continue to serve you and your children.

Did you know?
Cyberbullying is when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person.
Many parents are particularly concerned about cyberbullying because while adults often have an understanding of the bullying that happens face to face, using technology to hurt someone else may be a new phenomenon for them. While cyberbullying is still less common than traditional bullying, it can be particularly damaging because it:
· can happen even after the child leaves school for the day,
· can be anonymous,
· is frequently very public with a potentially unlimited audience, and
· is often easier to be cruel when you don’t have face to face interaction.
At the same time, many parents are not active on the same websites or technology as their children and may not have knowledge of what their child is experiencing while online or on their phone. Learn what you can do so that you have a positive influence! For tips and talking points, parents can visit http://www.pacer.org/bullying/resources/parents/mobile-and-online-safety.asp

I have listed more than the top 5 students this month. We have students giving each other a run for the prizes. They are so close in their miles and laps and racing to reach their goal first. They are having a blast adding up the miles. I'm so proud of all the students walking/running in the club. They all are doing a great job! Parents ask your child how many miles they have. Extended Care
We hope everyone had a fun/relaxing Spring Break and ready to roll into the last weeks of school. Here in the ED Center we have begun registering students for the 2018-’19 school year. We will have the applications on hand in the Cafeteria during ED Center hours of operation or they can be sent home with your child per your request.
When doing your Spring Cleaning, please keep us in mind before throwing out balls or other outdoor equipment that we may use, as our budget is very tight. Please send the item to school in a bag marked ED Center. We truly appreciate it! That in mind, we will be starting to go outside more now that the weather is allowing so please encourage your child to wear play shoes suitable for the playground.
We have begun making Fridays Tech (Electronic) Days here in the ED Center and our kids have thoroughly enjoyed sharing with their friends. If your child doesn’t have something to bring or you don’t allow them J; we have netbooks that we share.
