4-H Project Spotlight!
Outdoor Adventures
The Outdoor Adventure Series has been designed for grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 respectively, but may be used by youth in any grade based on their skills, experience, and interest.
· Youth will practice and develop the life skills of relating to others, making decisions, and communicating with others.
· Plan and safely conduct camping, backpacking and wilderness excursions.
· Develop minimum impact skills according to Leave No Trace techniques.
Outdoor 1: Hiking Trails
In this introductory project, members will have the opportunity to get out and explore the natural world around them by going out on a day hike. They will learn to pack a backpack for their hike and learn what to put in their pack for a safe and enjoyable trip. The activities will allow them to experience new things and learn some important information. They will make notes about what they discover and what they have learned.
Outdoor 2: Camping Adventures
Whether you are a serious camper or just getting started, members will enjoy the activities in this project. Members will experience many new things! They will be eating, sleeping, and living in the outdoors on their camping trip. They will need to consider the various types of shelters and tents that can be used for camping, how to pack and plan meals and how to keep their campsite beautiful for future campers. As members complete the activities, they will also be practicing their decision making, problem solving and communication skills.
Outdoor 2: Backpacking Expeditions
Members will build on the hiking and camping skills used in levels 1 & 2. The activities will help them prepare to go on challenging backpacking trips. They will learn how to pack their backpack for a multi-day trip, including with they’ll need for shelter, clothing and cooking. Backpacking is a challenging activity, but one that brings many rewards—a sense of achievement, a beautiful view and new connections with the people in their hiking group. Backpacking will teach them new things about themselves as well as about the natural world. They will be encouraged to apply the skills that were learned through Outdoor Adventures to their daily lives. Many of these skills such as decision-making, problem solving, and communication can be applied to other areas of a member’s life.
