South Grove Intermediate School

News and Notes for September 2015

From Mrs. Reid

Thank you to all parents that joined us at our first PTO meeting of the year on Monday, August 31st. PTO is an organization for parents and teachers to work together for the common good of our students. There is no financial commitment or extreme time commitment. The meetings are informative about the daily happenings at South Grove. The PTO supports the great things that are happening at our school. Come join us! Our next meeting is Monday, October 5th at 6:00 in the SG cafeteria.

Progress Reports & Skyward

Teachers will have sent home paper reports for students with a D+ or below the week of August 31st.

Did you know you can set Skyward up to email you a weekly update of your child's grades? Here is a link with instructions how to do this.

This is a step by step view of how parents can go to Skyward at any time to check your child's grades.

Please contact Mrs. Collinsworth if you have any questions or have issues with your Family Access Login.

This means WAR...a PENNY WAR!

The South Grove Penny War is from September 14-18th. The fundraiser benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. 90 cents to every dollar goes directly to research, so every penny counts! Parents can send in coins, bills or even write a tax-deductible check. The class who raises the most money will receive a class party.

Contact Ms. Beth Walker If you have any questions!

Notes from our Nurse

Cleaning out your closets for the Fall? The clinic is in need of size 8-12 pants for both boys and girls that students may have outgrown. If you're not going to use them as hand-me-downs, please think of donating them! Thanks! Please make sure clothes are clean and school appropriate!

Attention all 6th grade Parents: Please make sure your child receives the Meningococcal & T-dap vaccines. These are Indiana State required shots, after age 11. If you have a religious/medical exemption, I need paperwork signed and returned to the school. Thanks to all who have turned in their vaccination paperwork; I am working diligently to get every date entered into our system!

Sixth Grade News - Chromebooks are going home!

Sixth grade students are now able to take their school issued Chromebook home to complete homework and access digital learning tools. Mrs. Collinsworth has gone over the Beech Grove City School's Acceptable Use Policy and the Corporation's expectations for caring for the device.

Student accounts are monitored even at home using a program called Go Guardian. For more information please visit http://bit.ly/1MVGOOn.

Students/Families are responsible for any damage, even accidental, to the device. Please click the link to read the entire document included in the summer registration packet.

Reading Reminders from Mrs. Johnson

Accelerated Reader and myON are two supplemental reading programs that South Grove students will utilize all school year. Teachers will help students set individual A.R. goals each grading period and the students will read books in their reading range, take comprehension quizzes, and earn points for correct answers. Students that reach their A.R. goals will earn an ice cream sundae! Our myON program is an on-line library with over 9,000 books! Students are able to choose books that they would like to read and then take a corresponding comprehension quiz. Students can utilize myON anywhere Internet access is available. Parents can check their child's reading progress for both Accelerated Reader and myON by going to the Beech Grove City Schools website and clicking on Students & Parents.

FREE Preschool Speech Therapy!

Beech Grove City Schools provides speech and language therapy for pre-school children who have difficulty saying sounds and words, following directions, talking in short sentences, or are stuttering. Therapy is done at Hornet Park Elementary by a licensed Speech/Language Pathologist and is free of charge.

If one or more of the below statements applies to your child, you may want to consider speech therapy for your child.

  1. My child does not imitate sounds or words.
  2. My child is only understood by family members.
  3. My child cannot say all of the following sounds: p, b, m, n, t, d, h, w.
  4. My child cannot follow directions.
  5. My child speaks in 1-2 word phrases.
  6. My child cries or shows frustration when trying to speak.
  7. My child points at things to communicate rather than use words.

A Speech/Language Pathologist can test what your child understands, what your child says, and your child’s speech sounds and words. The testing will help determine if speech therapy is needed.

Please contact Chris McGown, Speech/Language Pathology Department Chair for Beech Grove City Schools, so that your child can have a jump start before he or she starts kindergarten.
