We’ve finally finished our “field trip” to Washington, DC. The kids did such a good job planning our trip and considering all the details. They all have very strong opinions about everything from where we visited to where we would eat for dinner. It has been a wonderful opportunity to see their logic as they look at the different choices involved in planning a vacation and as they negotiated with their classmates to get their choice of restaurants. They’ve become so excited about the different attractions there are to see in our nation’s capital.
The next step in our learning process will be for the students to choose a place that they would like to plan their own vacation to. So far there are some very interesting and some very unique places that they’ve chosen to visit. Even a couple of towns I’d never heard of. So I’m personally very curious to learn more about those areas. I’m very excited to see how their projects will turn out.

3, 2, 1 Blast-Off!
The 4th and 5th GrrRaiders of Bruneau Elementary School had a wildly successful launch of our spring PBL unit when we attended the Bruneau Library’s Lecture Series, featuring Mr. Jim Duthie, meteorologist at KTVB Channel 7, and U of Idaho Extension Service Master Gardner. In order to accommodate our large class the library moved the talk to the Bruneau Emergency Center and it was a standing-room only house.
Armed with clipboards and a graphic organizer for taking notes and recording questions, the students were perfect models of academic minds. Mr. Duthie’s talk was fascinating, weaving weather, the career of meteorology, and his Master Gardner expertise in a very informative and entertaining lecture which kicked off our PBL which we hope will answer this question; “What Does It Take to Create a Sustainable School Garden?”
Thank You, Mr., Duthie!
Three Letters of Thanks
Dear Mr. Duthie,
Thank you for teaching us about gardening and teaching us meteorology. I liked your slide show and your background, it was really cool!
Thank you for letting us go to the emergency center. I have never been there before. It’s really nice inside and it was really fun! Your garden on the slide show was nice! I liked your “salad bowl” [salad greens planted in a pot suitable for an indoor kitchen window] too.
Your outfit was really nice too. So thank you for letting us to the emergency center, Mr. Duthie.
Sincerely,
Oli Prow
Dear Mr. Duthie,
Thank you for coming to Bruneau. I’m so glad you came. It was very interesting and fun. I didn’t know that much about weather and gardening but now I know about it and I can teach other people.
I loved your slide show. The thing [way] about when you pulled apart the word “meteorology” to show us what it means and that’s what we’re learning about in school. My teacher was so excited she was about to scream. That’s what I learned. When I grow up I want to work at KTVB.
Sincerely,
Rocky Aquiso
Dear Mr. Duthie,
Thank you so much for coming to Bruneau. I am so glad you came. I had so much fun! I’m sure my other classmates had fun too.
Your talk was very interesting. I didn’t know very much about weather or gardening but now I do. I learned some gardening basics: plan ahead, know my soil, follow instructions on the seed package, know how big your plants are going to get, and always water and fertilize your plants. I am so glad our class went to your great presentation.
Our trip was a mix of fun, amazing slide show, your smarts, and science. I learned so much. I can’t wait to use my new understandings in our gardening PBL project to grow a sustainable garden.
Thank you again!

"In PE, it was great to get out and enjoy some of the nice weather! We have been running an "obstacle course" around the school yard with the students taking turns leading the pack. Also, this past month of February, we have been learning the Cupid Shuffle line dance,
practicing basketball skills, and learning about keeping our heart and lungs healthy through cardio exercise and making healthy choices."
