Great Things at NBS - #ColtPride

Dear North Barrington Families,

The #ColtPride continues here at North Barrington. We have had several classrooms earn their "We Have Colt Pride" status and they celebrated with special events this week. We also have been working hard increasing our stamina in reading, writing, and math. Thank you to each of you for supporting our continued in-person learning. Our students have also had opportunities getting physically active in PE and creative in music and art. There have been sounds from orchestra as well as band inside and outside of our school. I am including in our weekly newsletter some important information.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our school. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions regarding your child's learning experience at North Barrington Elementary School, please feel free to contact me at 847-304-4870 or lwest@barrington220.org.

Enjoy your weekend,

Lisa

Fidgets

We need your help. We have had a lot of fidgets and other items brought to school. We are requesting that these items remain at home as they are becoming a distraction to learning. We will have a fidget day as part of our spirit weeks during the year.

Thank you for supporting this request.

SPOTLIGHT ON STEM

This Week in STEM - 2nd Grade Boot Camp

This week, all classes in grades 2 and 3 participated in STEM Boot Camp. This means they came to STEM every day of the week to focus on a particular STEM topic. Students in 2nd grade learned about Simple Machines through demonstrations, videos, group discussions and hands-on activities. They created structures with levers, wheels and axles, and pulleys using LEGO Early Simple Machines kits. Their creativity shined as they constructed seesaws, drawbridges, catapults, merry-go-rounds and pulley systems!

Students in 3rd grade started the week using the LEGO WeDo 2.0 kit to build a model of a rover robot and learned to program it using the WeDo app on their iPad. They finished the week using their new knowledge to complete collaboration challenges, where they paired up with another team to operate their rovers together. These challenges allowed them to practice their collaboration and communication skills, which are such valuable life skills!

If you have any questions about STEM at NBS, please contact the STEM teacher, Mrs. Rita Thurston, at rthurston@barrington220.org.

Shield Testing Information

North Barrington's Shield Testing is every Wednesday. If you are still interested in opting out your child, please email Jody Carroll in the office (jcarroll@barrington220.org). A new opt out form will need to be sent to your parent portal of Infinite Campus. It is very important that you go through each step and click submit in order to complete the process.

If you have trouble with the process, please call the office. We will put an identifier on your child's ID card so they are not tested. Then we can work to get the information into IC. Additionally, please note that the timeframe to process the opt out forms is now 7 days.

Masks & Water Bottles

We are requesting that you please send extra masks for your child to keep in their backpack. This will ensure they have an additional mask if they need to switch to a different one later in the day.

Also, your child should bring a refillable water bottle to school each day. The bottle filling features are working but the drinking fountains are closed due to Covid.

Thank you.

North Barrington Elementary School

North Barrington Elementary School is one of eight elementary schools in the Barrington 220 School District. Our school serves K-5 grade students. The original North Barrington Elementary School opened in 1946, consolidating five one-room schoolhouses in the area. At the time of the school's dedication, it was heralded as a 'school for the motor age' because of special design features that accommodated students arriving by car and bus. Fifty years later, voters approved a referendum to rebuild North Barrington at the same sight.
