Math
We have continued our Combinations within 5 Unit this week. In this unit, students are asked to add and subtract within 5. We have been working to understand the connection between addition and subtraction as well as distinguish between the two when solving equations. In the past few lessons, we have worked on writing equations to represent the addition or subtraction. Then, we completed a number of addition and subtraction facts. Students noticed that we need to pay close attention to the plus or minus sign to determine how to solve the problem. Another objective of this unit is that students should know addition and subtraction facts within 5 fluently. The more we practice these facts the sooner students will have memorized these basic math facts. We will continue working toward this fact fluency and solving word problems in the coming lessons.
Writing
In writing, we are focusing on writing complete sentences. This week, we wrote a sentence (or more) about something like to eat. We needed to first state the complete sentence to our partner. Then, we started with an uppercase letter at the beginning of our sentence. We remembered that we need spaces between the words and that our letters should be lower case! We finished with a period at the end of our sentence and drew a picture of our favorite food. We are working on developing these skills independently!
6th Grade Learning Buddies
Our 6th grade buddies helped to assess our progress in various math skills. A number of 6th graders came up and told me that they were so proud of their kindergarten buddy's progress! After they finished the assessments, they got to pick a board game to play with their buddy.
