Volume 8: The Team

In the past, the idea of academic and career planning was thought to rest squarely on the shoulders of the school counselors in a high school. We have made an important shift in the state of Wisconsin, and in particular, in the Sheboygan Area School District. ACP works best when approached as a team. School counselors, administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, and most importantly the student, must all play a role in the process that begins in earnest in 6th grade and concludes when our students "walk the bowl" at high school graduation.

In volume 8 of the SASD ACP newsletter, we highlight the role of the teacher, which is often overlooked. Volume 8 also contains the world premiere of the SASD ACP video. It was produced in partnership with Silverwater Productions and is designed to provide all stakeholders in the community with more information about ACP in the SASD -- how we do it, but more importantly, why we do it. Enjoy and spread the word!

SASD New Teacher Made Here Tour

On August 20th 41 new teachers boarded a chartered bus to spend the afternoon at two of Sheboygan County's largest employers; Johnsonville and Sargento. This was the second year that new teachers, as part of their orientation, have participated in the event. Last year, teachers visited Kohler Co. and Rockline. The Made Here Tour aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Provide exposure to knowledge and skills needed to be successful in a variety of careers at major employers in the Sheboygan area
  • Build awareness of the local economy
  • Spur educator reflection about connecting classroom curriculum to the community
Afterwards, teachers gathered for food, fun, and fellowship. Thank you to Johnsonville, Sargento, LTC, and Inspire for sponsoring the event!

Teacher Externships

On August 27th, all South High School teachers completed teacher externships with area employers. An externship is a temporary training program in a workplace. SASD teachers will often spend time in a workplace outside of education to learn about career skills that can be incorporated into their classrooms.

The objective of the day was to provide teachers with an opportunity to see local industry in action and learn how it applies to the subjects they teach. The end result will help increase relevancy and value of the high school experience by preparing students for careers. This was phase one of a yearlong, school-wide curriculum review. Thank you to our hosts, Rockline, Sargento, Johnsonville, Kohler, Prevea, and Sheboygan County Government for a great morning of professional development!
