Phobos

What are phobos?

It is a natural satellite to Mars and has a very irregular shape.

Deimos and Phobos are Mars’ moons. Phobos is the larger moon, which is 7 times as large as Deimos. They are both named after Greek mythology, the sons of Ares. Phobos means fear or panic and Deimos means flight from defeat.Phobos is about 27x22x18km in size. Both of Mars moons are the smallest in the solar system. They are not round, but very irregular in shape with large craters.Phobos is so close to Mars that sometimes it can’t be seen by our satellites. It is also why Phobos is projected to collide with Mars or break into rings.

Information about Phobos

Phobos is one of Mars’s two moons that were discovered in 1877.

Phobos and Deimos were both discovered by an American astronomer named Asph Hall in1877. Phobos is known for it’s giant crater named Stickney, which was discovered in 1970. The astronomers that discovered it named it after Halls’ wife. They believe the crater was created by an huge impact. Phobos orbits around Mars three times a day. Deimos orbits Mars every 30 hours. Phobos is much closer to Mars surface than Deimos. Phobos is the closest moon to a planet in the solar system and is only 3,700 miles away from Mars. Phobos and Deimos are bumpy and full of craters and loose rocks. The moons are both made of carbon rich rock mixed with ice and captured asteroids.
