Weekly Newsletter
March 15th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
We have many exciting events coming up in Term 4, but without question students are most excited about our annual experiential learning trip with Adventure Korea on April 24th - 26th! I've included details, itineraries, and budget information about this trip within this week's MS Newsletter, so be sure to take a close look and let us know if you have any questions!
We will also hold Parent Information Session #4 on Thursday, March 21st between 3:00 - 4:00pm in the Small Theater. The focus will be on how CDS High School prepares students for college in Korea and abroad. Please click the RSVP button if you would like to attend.
We're excited to announce that The Dalton School in New York will visit Cheongna Dalton School next week to learn more about our school and discuss opportunities for collaboration. They will be speaking with students and teachers throughout their stay, and will give a presentation in Dalton Hall between 4:15 and 5:00pm on Tuesday, March 19th. Parents are welcome to attend the presentation in Dalton Hall as long as their children are in ASP clubs, or are otherwise supervised. We look forward to learning more about how The Dalton School carries out the three parts of the Dalton Plan (House, Lab, Assignment) within their school in New York.
Please remember that students will have the opportunity to sign up for spring co-curricular clubs (CCs) on Sunday morning (3/17) at exactly 10:00am. Please visit the CDS Middle School website for the sign up form. Space is limited in certain clubs, so please be up and ready! Students began signing up for After School Programs (ASPs) on Wednesday morning. The registration deadline for ASPs is Sunday night at 4:00pm. You will receive an email next week indicating which ASPs your child has signed up for.
Have a great weekend!

We will be partnering again this year with Adventure Korea, an organization that has provided high quality experiential learning opportunities to several international schools in Korea over the last 18 years. Last year's trip was a big success and we expect this year to be even better!
The purpose of this program is to help students build teamwork, cooperation, collaboration, and community through outdoor challenges and activities. CDS teachers will work closely with Adventure Korea staff to ensure a safe and positive learning experience for everyone.

PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports)
At the Term 4 Assembly, we had a raffle for students to win prizes who received a RISE card throughout Term 3. Students receive RISE cards by demonstrating one of the four expectations and going above and beyond with their behavior.
We have also created a PBIS website, which is accessible on the MS Dalton website. You can learn more about PBIS and how we have implemented it here at CDS! The website will be updated regularly so that anyone can learn about our behavior plan at CDS.

Making Soap with "DECA"
[This week, around CDS MS]
Science class with Mr. Keel
In Grade 5 this week we investigated how density effects the behavior of liquids. Students added different amounts of sugar to water dyed with food coloring to manipulate the concentration and change the density of the water.
Students then carefully added the water to a graduated cylinder creating layers based on density. The final effect, if the students followed all the steps diligently, was a rainbow of different colored water with specific densities. The classroom was lively with a spectrum of color and student enthusiasm.

Science class with Mr. Howell
This week grade 6 Earth Science students learned about the motion of celestial objects and the effects of gravity. We addressed the historical developments regarding the theory of gravity, and focused on Aristotle and Galileo in particular.
In an effort to test these ideas we conducted a free-fall gravity experiment in which students worked in teams to measure and record the speeds of falling objects and to compare this information with the mass of these objects. The results generally seemed to agree with Galileo’s conclusions although there was some support for Aristotle as well, which we deduced was the result of resistance from the surrounding air. Overall, it was a fun and engaging experience.

HAPPY PI DAY with 5th and 6th graders
Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. A pi-ku poem still has only three lines but it has a different number of syllables in each line, based on the digits of pi. The first line has 3 syllables, the second line has 1 syllable, and the third line has 4 syllables. Since the poems are so short I was able to share every student's pi-ku for your reading pleasure!
