Investigations in Life Science

Dear Boone Meadow Families,

The abbreviated week didn't slow us down as we engaged and participated in academics, safety drills, field trips, and numerous other learning experiences throughout our 4-day week. In all classrooms, we are studying life sciences and how living things grow and change. Be sure to check in with your child to share in their learning.


A few important items and reminders:


Jog-A-Thon (JAT) is quickly approaching (September 23rd). All students/families are encouraged to participate in this fundraising activity for Boone Meadow PTO. Please see the information below for how you can contribute, participate, and volunteer. Timelines and other important information is included below.


School Safety & Drills - Today (Friday, 9/9/22) we rehearsed our fire evacuation drill, our severe weather drill, as well as, employed a precautionary perimeter lockdown. All went smoothly and safely. We were impressed with how quickly and quietly the students followed procedures! In the coming weeks, we will be holding dialogue regarding earthquake drills and lockdown drills. We approach the lockdown drill in a developmentally appropriate manner in order to ensure students are not only safe, but also feel safe.

Note: During a perimeter lockdown, all staff and students are within the building and activity within the building goes unchanged for all staff and students. During today's perimeter lockdown activity was unchanged for students.


The Art of Learning Programs - Last night, Mr. Doublestein hosted a hands-on learning experience presented by Crayola Education entitled "The Art of Learning Through Homemade Instruments". Click here or the image above to view last night's live presentation by our very own Music Man!


Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival - This weekend, September 9-11. This annual event is celebrated in our community the first weekend following Labor Day. On Saturday, the parade makes its way from ZCHS through downtown Zville beginning at 10:00 AM. In addition, food, bounce houses, arts & crafts, and music fill the park. Many ZCS students participate with their school clubs and musical groups. It's always a highly anticipated event.

Crayola Education and Bow Tie Music present "The Art of Learning through Homemade Instruments"

Jog-A-Thon - Friday Sept. 23rd

Our biggest fundraiser event is coming! This event helps the Boone Meadow Parent Teacher Organization pay for things like bus fees for field trips and provides funds to support classroom resources and special student experiences. Playground equipment, the STEM gardens, rock wall, technology, celebrations, supplies for special projects, school infrastructure projects, and school staff support. Any donation makes a big difference


The sign up for volunteers at Jog-a-Thon is also open! If you are able to help, please consider signing up to help on Friday, September 23rd.


Our event is heavily dependent on the support of our volunteers, like you! We would love for you to sign up and help with what suits you best!


All in-person volunteers are to arrive 10 minutes before their scheduled time to check in at the front office. Once your scheduled time is over we ask that you would leave the event to allow for the next set of volunteers, or head over to our spectator area to watch the fun!

Jog-A-Thon Times and important info

JAT Times:

  • Preschool 9:50-10:20
  • Kindy - 12:40-1:15
  • 1st & 2nd grades - 8:45-9:30
  • 3rd & 4th grades - 10:40-11:40


Note:

  • Jog-A-Thon shirts will be distributed to students the morning of the event.
  • Have students dress accordingly with appropriate shoes.
  • Don't forget sunscreen and a water bottle.
  • All volunteers MUST have a completed and clear full background check on file prior to the event.
  • Rain date is Friday, Sept. 30th


Constitution and Citizenship Day

Constitution Day is on September 17, 2022. If you would like to learn more about Constitution Day, please check out the National Endowment for the Humanities who provides content on the Constitution through the EDSITEMENT web site: http://edsitement.neh.gov/constitution-day Additionally, Saturday, 17, 2022 is Smithsonian Day and many of our local museums will have free admission on September 17, 2022. Save the Date for Free Family Movie Night 9/30

As an opportunity to celebrate the community support for our Jog-A-Thon, PTO is hosting this event for our BME community on Friday, September 30th. Bring the family and your lawn chairs for a free movie night which will be hosted in our back lot. Popcorn will be provided, and feel free to also bring your own soft drinks &/or water. Come grab your spot as early as 7:00, & the movie will begin at approximately 7:30. The movie title will be announced soon.

Child Find

Child Find is the process for locating, identifying, and evaluating individuals with suspected disabilities who may need special education services, regardless of the severity of their disabilities. This is the responsibility of ZCS regardless of whether a parent affirmatively requests an evaluation. ZCS provides a Free Appropriate Public Education to any child who qualifies as having a disability, in accordance with federal and state laws. ZCS is responsible for locating all children ages 3 through 22 years of age with a suspected disability who reside within the boundaries of its district. With early identification and intervention, frustration and academic failure can be prevented, which in turn creates a positive learning experience for students. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), which encompasses academics and/or social and emotional learning, is an essential component of the child find process. Utilizing screening assessments, the ZCS team members identify students in need of intervention, implement action plans, and monitor the response to the targeted interventions. In addition, the evaluation referral procedures in ZCS provide the framework to refer students with suspected disabilities for evaluation.


Speech Assistance Program

The Speech Assistance Program is designed to provide support to students with single sound articulation errors that are not age appropriate within the general education setting. Following the MTSS approach, this program allows for early identification and treatment of mild articulation disorders so students receive assistance without having to be identified under special education. The Speech Assistance Program is a three-tiered system in which progress is monitored to determine if additional supports are needed. If adequate progress is not demonstrated, a referral for evaluation will be prompted to determine eligibility under special education.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS

We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building typically offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. If you plan to assist as chaperones or engage with children in a volunteer capacity, we strongly recommend getting a criminal background check completed well in advance to have on file.

Examples include:

  • Field Trip Chaperones
  • Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
  • Tutors
  • Volunteer Coaches
  • Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
  • Library Helpers
  • After Prom Workers
  • Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
  • Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales

During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website.


CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS

During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.

  • Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Arrival and Dismissal Notes:

Within a 10-15 minutes window each morning and each afternoon, we strive to ensure all 550 students are transported safely to where they need to be. At dismissal each day, all students remain in their classrooms until called for buses, cars, BAC, walkers, etc.. Behind the scenes is a network of staff and communication that works cohesively to get children where they need to go. Thank you to all families that follow our daily routines and procedures. We would not be able to keep children safe without your cooperation.


Below, you will find some updates regarding arrival and dismissal:


Car Riders:

  • All cars should enter the Boone Meadow campus via Eagle Church entrance/access road. This is true for both arrival and dismissal
  • When approaching BME lot, near the end of access road, Kindergarten-4th grade vehicles should form 2 lines lines and wait until signaled by staff to approach the front curb.
  • Morning arrival/drop off begins at 7:50; Kindergarten drop off begins at 8:50.
  • All drop offs should occur at curb, unless a situation necessitates otherwise. Additional foot traffic at crosswalk delays arrival.
  • Students must exit on curb side of vehicle.
  • Thank you for keeping our fire lane clear until signaled by staff to pull up. The fire lane must remain clear as much as possible for potential emergency needs and school deliveries.
  • Displaying car/family numbers in an easy to see manner is greatly beneficial. Ball point pen writing on a post it placed on your dash is hard for my old eyes to see, so bold numbers hanging from the rear view mirror or attached to the passenger sun visor assists in moving vehicles efficiently through the line.
  • Please reduce idling when possible. The build up of vehicle emissions is not only harmful for the environment, but also creates unhealthy air quality for staff and students.

Drop off / Pick up Times for Car Riders:

Universal Preschool:

  • Universal Preschool - Drop off time is at 8:15am - Drop off at door 1 (main entrance). Your drop off will begin after elementary students (1st-4th) have arrived and unloaded. Please line up in the left lane of the Eagle Church/BME access road, and wait to be called forward by Preschool staff.
  • Universal Preschool - Pick up times 2:45-2:50pm - Pick up at door 1 (main entrance)

Kindergarten:

  • Kindergarten - Drop off times are 8:50-9:00am - Drop off at door 1 (main entrance)
  • Kindergarten - Pick up times are 2:30-2:45pm - Pick up at door 1. Kindergarten students are dismissed with all K-4th grade students.
1st - 4th Grade:
  • 1st-4th Grades - Drop off times are 7:50am-8:00am - Drop off at door 1.
  • 1st-4th Grades - Pick up times are 2:30-2:45pm - Pick up at door 1.

Walker/Bike: We will continue to assist with crossing Main Street by having staff present whenever possible. Please note the following items:


Significant weather (walkers/bikers) - When weather is inclement with heavy rain, heavy snow, sleet, etc...walking to school is highly discouraged. The office team will make the decision if staff will be present at the crosswalk.

  • If families decide to walk to school and no crosswalk staff is present, an adult or family member must safely escort students to the front doors. The doors will open at approximately 7:50 for arrival, and families should wait at the front doors with their students until the doors open.
  • Walkers and bikers will be dismissed after car riders each day (approximately 2:40-2:45). This allows families to use the car line for pick up when needed. Should you decide to pick up your child by car (vs walking) simply display your family number while you are in line and pick up your child(ren) at the front door with staff assistance.

  • In the event of questionable or severe weather, families must utilize the car rider procedures instead of walking/biking. (stormy weather, lightning, sleet, you need to get Toto before going to the Land of Oz...)

  • Please do not bypass the car rider line and request to pick up students from the parking lot, other school sidewalks, etc... Again, we must adhere to all procedures for the safety of students and staff


Bus RIders:

  • Families should refer to the teacher assignment email you will receive in the coming days in order to locate your bus transportation information. The email provides bus stop times and location for pick up and drop off.
  • Staff readily awaits students at arrival with supervision fully provided from bus to classroom where teachers await their arrival. Kindergarten students are released first off of the buses where staff escorts them into the building for Bridge or Early Start Spanish programming. Following Bridge/Early Start Spanish, they are escorted to their classroom.



Please note: We anticipate a large volume of personal vehicles during arrival and dismissal. Your patience is greatly appreciated as we fine-tune logistics during the first couple of weeks to ensure children are safe and in their proper location.

Health Clinic Reminders

Clinic Procedures

  • All medication (prescription and OTC) must be brought in to the clinic (main office) by a parent/guardian. Students are not allowed to have any medication in their backpack, unless authorized in writing by a physician.
  • Set a time to meet with our nursing team if your child has severe allergies or a medical condition that may warrant a Health Care Plan. Our nurse will be available at BOTH Meet the Teacher Night Events on August 1st and August 2nd for your convenience.
  • As a reminder, when your child is ill, please call the main office and press 2 to leave a message on the attendance line. As always, we ask that children are fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication prior to returning to school.

Immunizations

  • Indiana code (IC 20-34-4-5) states that all children attending public schools in our state shall be immunized according to requirements set forth by the Indiana State Department of Health. Please ensure that the health clinic professional in your child’s school has been supplied with the most up-to-date copy of your child’s immunization records!
