An important religious holiday in Russia is Easter. Eggs are painted with brightly colored dyes and wax. They also make special cakes and Russian tea cake cookies.

New Year's Day

The most popular holiday in Russia is New Year’s Day. A tree is decorated and people have parties. Grandfather Frost, who is like our Santa Claus, brings gifts to children.

Shrovetide

Russians celebrate Shrovetide which is the celebration of Spring coming. A straw figure that stands for Winter is burned. People dress up in costumes and play tricks on each other. This holiday is right before Easter and lasts a week.
