Canon-McMillan Middle School Art Students Created "Random Acts of Kindness" Mural
The inspiration for the mural came from contemporary American artist, Jonathan Saiz. He is known for his large murals made up of smaller works of art. In 2019, he displayed a work entitled “#WhatIsUtopia”. It consisted of 10,000 individual 2”x2” pieces of art. Once the exhibition closed, he gave away every piece. Students in Art classes and art club members created small individual pieces to add to this mural. The pieces were given away on Random Acts of Kindness Day, February 17th.
“I don’t know if free art can create a better world, but I’m inspired to try…one tiny painting at a time.” Jonathan Saiz

- Parent Council 6:00 -7:00 PM (Guest Speaker Dr. Taranto)
- Community Open House 7:00- 8:00 PM
All Canon-McMillan families are invited to a special evening Parent Council Meeting on March 21, 2023 held at the new Canon-McMillan Middle School. Guest speaker, Dr. Greg Taranto will be speaking to parents on the influence of social media and vaping on today's children. Mental health issues and nicotine usage are at high levels among today's children. Parents will learn ways to help their children navigate away from the pitfalls associated with social media and vaping. We strongly urge all parents especially our elementary and middle school parents because the sooner you hear this message, the better.
Dr. Taranto currently serves as the District's Assistant to the Superintendent for K-6 Curriculum & Instruction. Prior to his current position, he was the middle school principal for the past 20 years. He has spoken and written on the topic of Internet safety and social media for the past 20 years and on the topic of vaping for over 5 years. His passion on these topics are personal as he has seen first hand the problems social media and vaping both have caused on many children's lives as a principal. He will present practical information and strategies for parents.
Following Dr. Taranto's presentation the new Canon-McMillan Middle School will be open to the community to tour the new building. Staff members will be available throughout the building to answer questions. We hope to see you there.

F.I.D. vs. Snow Days
As you may or may not know, Canon-McMillan School District has been approved for five (5) Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs), which may be used in place of a school day that would be canceled because of inclement weather or another emergency situation. On a FID, students will complete remote instruction/learning activities and assignments provided by their teachers at home.
The benefit of implementing a FID is that it does not require additional make-up days when school is canceled, which could shorten the spring break or extend the school year. The District received approval for five (5) FIDs to use this school year if necessary.
How does the district determine if a Snow Day or a FID will be used?
If the district receives information that there will be inclement weather in advance then a FID will likely be used. If the inclement weather is unexpected then a Snow Day will likely occur. FIDs will be treated as asynchronous learning days, which means that lessons and instruction must be posted by 10:00 AM. Coursework can be completed at any point during the day as long as it is submitted the next school day.
Families were sent a survey to determine how many chromebooks would be needed should a FID occur. If you did not receive this survey please contact your building principal. If there are any additional questions regarding FIDs, please consult our Frequently Asked Questions link or contact your building principal.
