Safety Protocol Reminder
Mrs. Langlois PE News
During the first few weeks of January our students learned about cardiovascular fitness and different types of exercises that benefit their hearts. Students learned how to check their pulse and were able to get a sneak peak to what is going on inside their bodies during exercise! We checked our pulse before, during, and after different types of exercise and talked about the changes that happened during those activities.
Our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders experimented with two different types of workouts. They participated in a HITT workout (high intensity interval training) as well as an EMOM workout (every minute on the minute). They did an amazing job with both and were very insightful as to what these workouts did to their heart rates. It was also very interesting getting their feedback to their personal preference between these two popular training styles.
These past couple weeks in PE, all of our students have been working on their under hand throw and rolling skills while also learning about bowling. They found items around their homes to use as bowling pins and participated in many bowling activities and challenges to improve some of their skills. It was fun to see some of the creative things the kids came up with for use of their bowling pins.
To the parents/guardians...I thank you for your patience with some of these activities I am requesting of your kids! I know that your assistance is instrumental in the success of some of the lessons and I appreciate all that you are doing to make it possible for the kids to be engaged during their gym time.
Keep and eye out in Schoology for some fun fitness challenges coming your way to try and help promote physical activity through the winter months! I hope you and the family will join in on the fun of staying active while it’s cold out.
Stay healthy and stay safe!
6th Grade Curriculum Update
6th grade students watched the "Remember the Titans" movie. We documented scenes with racial inequalities. We discussed the inequalities and how the team works to overcome their differences. We are also researching influential African Americans and presenting to the class. We are sharing what their person is known for and how that person opened doors for those following in their footsteps.
EL Curriculum Update With Mrs. Zeig
Our EL students are in the midst of WIDA testing and they are doing a fantastic job! They are applying the listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills we practice in small groups to show growth from the previous year. During our virtual group time, we continue to practice oral language development with Social Emotional check-ins and the MONDO Let's Talk About It program. Students are also practicing foundational reading skills and academic vocabulary with McGraw Hill supplemental lessons. Our lessons coincide with the McGraw Hill lessons the classroom teachers are implementing. In addition to our curriculum, students are using BrainPOP to learn more about Black History Month as well as the Lunar New Year. I am so proud of our students for persevering through remote/virtual learning this year. They are truly doing a wonderful job!
1st Grade VA Curriculum Update
Our VA 1st graders have been busy learning about different kinds of reading genres over the past few months. We have been working hard at writing complete sentences and adding 3 details to our narrative stories. We are looking forward to learning about how to write awesome informational stories next. In math, we have worked a lot on using different strategies to solve addition and subtraction story problems. Throughout the month of December, we will be studying different holidays celebrated around the world, including sharing our own family traditions. It's going to be a fun and busy month!

LAPTOP MESSAGE RESOLUTION INSTRUCTIONS
Havel Families,
We greatly appreciate your continued partnership to keep our students and staff safe as we have moved to face-to-face learning. Your support of self-screening procedures for your Havel Hawks each morning is key to our continued success in providing a safe and positive learning environment.
It is important that families who may be traveling over mid-winter break follow closely the additional guidelines to mitigate any spread of COVID-19 in our community. These guidelines were issued in the recent Presidential Executive Order and Center for Disease Control (CDC) Travel Guidance (links are listed below for your reference).
Families planning to travel internationally should know and comply with the Presidential Order requiring the CDC recommendations for international air travel. For Utica Community Schools students this means the that they must follow the below procedures following their return and before returning to school.
** Student must quarantine at home immediately upon return from international air travel. This should be for a minimum of seven (7) or ten (10) calendar days (see below)
** Student should get tested for COVID-19 upon return from international air travel. This is best conducted during the window of three to five days after return
-- If test result is positive for COVID-19, follow all applicable quarantine requirements
-- If test result is negative for COVID-19, continue to self-monitor, and may return to school after the full seven days, provided no symptoms emerge
- If the student does not get tested within the window indicted above, she/he is to self-monitor for ten days, and may return to school after the full ten days, provided no symptoms emerge
- Even upon completing quarantine, students who have engaged in international air travel should continue to distance from medically fragile persons for fourteen days from return.
Students should make us aware in advance of any international air travel so that any quarantining absence is appropriately recorded. Please be advised that Utica Community Schools is not obligated to provide expanded remote learning for students quarantined following voluntary international travel.

Executive Order: Executive Order on Promoting COVID-19 Safety in Domestic and International Travel | The White House
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the safety of our Havel community. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and I am happy to work through anything with you. Have a wonderful weekend!
