Robotics Summer China Trip
In July, six North High Magnet School students participated in the NEBS Robot Summer Camp & China Cup Invitational Tournament in Shanghai, China. These students competed in the Vex game called “In the Zone,” where students have to build robots to move and stack cones. North High Magnet team members Kalvin Green, Cole Vaske, and Maliik Jones were named tournament finalists by making it to the championship finals. Students Jacob Gardner, Aurto Gallegos-Zaragoza and Colin Vickery won the Think Award. The Think Award is presented to a team that has developed and effectively used quality programs as part of their strategy to solve the game challenge.
During the NEBS Robot Summer Camp they spent a day with a Chinese student going to school and learning a bit of Mandarin. Students were placed on teams with Chinese students and were challenged to break the communication barrier and build a robot in three short hours and then use that robot to compete in a mini-competition.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these students that they will remember forever!
Physical Science in a Planetarium
On Monday and Tuesday (August 20th & 21st) in the library, the amazing Physical Science teachers at Omaha North (Jonathan Tindall, Aaron Musson, Tucker Whitaker, Elizabeth Prusha, & David Teal) started the year off with a bigger hook than “just” the Big Bang for their first lesson; the lesson includes components of the 5E model.
They took Dr. Chris Schaben’s idea of using a planetarium and ran with it. However, instead of taking a field trip to the planetarium, Jack Northrup (former teacher at King Science) brought his
Rolling Bluffs Digital Planetarium to North! It was a very engaging lesson for the 16 classes that cycled through the 25 minute presentation.
