LIBRARY NEWS

Hooray! The next few weeks classes will begin visiting and checking out books in the library. We will review book care procedures including:

  • Don’t eat or drink when reading a book.
  • Keep your books away from pets.
  • Keep your books in a safe place.
  • Use a bookmark to mark your place.

We would LOVE to have help in the library. If you are interested in helping out in the library this school year, please visit https://forms.office.com/r/h5wAsTHJxb and answer a few questions about the areas in the library in which you would like to help. We would greatly appreciate help shelving books, labeling books, or help checking out kindergarten/first grade classes. Please keep in mind that to volunteer you will need to have a background check on file with the school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Carrie Sturges (Teacher Librarian) at csturges@hse.k12.in.us Thank you!

Speech and Hearing Assessments

Welcome back DCE families! Many students will be participating in speech and hearing screenings during the first two weeks of school.

Speech screenings will be completed for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students and you will be contacted via email if your child would benefit from speech therapy services in the school setting. If you are not contacted, you can assume your child passed his/her speech screenings for their developmental age level (see chart below for district wide norms).

Hearing screenings will be completed for Kindergarten, 1st, 4th, and any new students who move to the HSE school district. Students will receive a slip of paper to send home to families if they passed. If they fail the screening, the student will be re-screened in 2-3 weeks and a referral will be sent home at that time if hearing continues to be a concern.

Feel free to contact me via email (aebrown@hse.k12.in.us) if you have any questions about your child’s speech or hearing abilities. Thanks for your support and let’s have a great year!

Sincerely,

Miss Avery Brown, M.A., CF-SLP
