Principal's Message
April 16, 2021
Dear Walnut Hills High School Families,
I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy and well. I came across this quote this week and thought it had some relevance to our current situation:
“Your path is your path. Don’t compare it to others. Everyone’s journey, timeline, gifts, constraints, obstacles, and triumphs are different. Don’t look to the left or right. Just keep looking within, look up, and look forward.”
- Jon Gordon
The quote is a good reminder that we need to respect our own journey. Parents of seniors - and all parents - I am certain that you can relate and have had this conversation with your son or daughter a few times this year. It is tempting for all of us to compare ourselves to others, and there is nothing like the college admissions and selection process to amplify that a little bit. The more that we can encourage our children to be true to their own path, the more likely it is that they will find it and succeed using their own unique combination of strengths and challenges. The only modification that I would add to this quote is the important idea of looking right and left to see if there is a way that we can help others on their journey. Our school motto of “Sursum ad Summum” contains just this idea: rise to the highest and help lift up others along the way.
As you know from the COVID-19 notification letters, there have been a few positive cases since we have been back to in-person learning. These situations give us an opportunity to do what is right to help ourselves, others, and the entire school community remain as healthy as possible. Here are a few clarifications:
If your son or daughter is ill, please keep him or her home from school. Please note that any student who is out ill for any reason must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test before returning to in-person learning. The test must be the PCR test; rapid and antibodies tests are not accepted.
We are required by the Health Department to send a notification letter to our school community to inform them of any positive COVID-19 cases.
If your son or daughter has been identified as a close contact, you will receive the positive case letter as well as an additional close contact letter. You will also be alerted via a robocall that your child was a close contact. Close contacts are defined as anyone who was within 6 feet of a person who tested positive for 15 cumulative minutes or more over a 24 hour period. Close contacts are required to quarantine for 10 days from the positive test results. The change from 14 to 10 day quarantine was just announced this week after collaborations among CPS, Cincinnati Health Department, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
A close contact may be exempt from quarantine if they can show proof of one of the two criteria: 1. The student (16 or older) has received the COVID-19 vaccine and is fully vaccinated. This means they are 2 weeks past the date of their 2nd vaccination dose. 2. The student has had a positive PCR test result within the last 90 days.
For more information on our student safety protocols, read our Student COVID-19 Guide.
As you can tell, communication is key. Please check your email and primary phone contact each evening to make certain that you have all of the necessary information. Thank you for doing so!
Sursum ad Summum,
John Chambers
