March Your Calendar
March 16th- MPES Fine Arts Night at 6:30 p.m.
What's coming up next week:
The end of the 3rd nine weeks is quickly approaching. How the year has flown by! We will spend next week reviewing concepts taught this 3rd nine weeks and teachers will be checking for mastery and assessing student learning for GKIDS.
In reading, students will be practicing and reviewing:
- short vowel sounds
- retelling stories with the characters, setting, problem, and solution
- identifying middle sounds in words (like the -a in the word cat)
- adding and subtracting sounds in words to make new words (i.e., you can take away the C in cat and add an H to make hat)
-comparing and contrasting characters and experiences in familiar stories.
We will also be reviewing the sight words from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd nine weeks. Please see the document attached below for a list of all the words we've learned. Thank you for practicing these words at home if there are any your child still doesn't know!
In writing, we will continue writing at least 2 sentences using grade appropriate language and conventions. It is important that students are able to communicate their ideas clearly as we approach the end of the grading period. During the final nine weeks students will be urged to develop a clear beginning, middle, and end in their writing. Also, students should be able to use punctuation marks and space between words.
In math, we will finish our study of non-standard measurement. It is important that students understand terms such as longer, shorter, taller, and capacity. You can help with this by encouraging your child to use these terms in their language at home. Also, students can measure items at home by using blocks, paperclips etc. Ask your child how to play "Straw Wars." All you need is a box of straws (cut different lengths) and a coin labeled "longer" and "shorter." Students can measure capacity by counting the number of spoonfuls of dried rice or beans it takes to fill a container or looking for objects around the house that contain capacity and putting them in order from smallest to largest.
In science, we will finish our study of non-standard measurement and begin building background for our study of living vs. non-living.
Guided Reading
*retell the story in his/her own words
*dictate, draw, or write about the characters, setting and events
*dictate, draw, or write about how the story is alike or different from another story with the same characters
*write their opinion about their favorite part or illustration
*discuss a different ending to the story
*predict what will happen next
Teachers will begin collecting end-of-year reading levels in April.
