Friendship Family Update
Information to share between our monthly newsletters
March 4, 2018 / 4 marzo de 2019
We have had a number of children and families talking about certain viral internet games and images that remind us of the need to regularly keep safe internet usage in the front of our minds. The internet offers all of us amazing resources for entertainment, information, and interest development. The challenge is that children may also be able to access material that can be troubling. While the specifics of challenging material may change, increasing our children's knowledge and skills, as well as our own, around digital citizenship will help everyone be able to safely and effectively navigate online experiences.
At home, here are some ways to support online safety. We ask for your support in following these online citizenship guidelines:
- Monitor internet access and usage
- Devices should be used with adult supervision and not be left in children’s rooms during the night.
- Parents should have free access to all devices, apps, and online accounts.
- Set limits for what apps, websites, and content children can access and consequences when such material is accessed.
- Talk to your children about how to stay safe on the internet
- Never share personal information or passwords with anyone.
- Click on apps and websites with caution; know what you are looking for.
- Be a good online citizen
- Take care of yourself on the internet by being respectful and safe.
- Take care of others on the internet. If you see something troubling or dangerous, tell an adult.
- Never post anything that you wouldn’t want the world to be able to see.

As a school, we will be taking the following steps:
-
Teaching, modeling, and reinforcing online citizenship in all classes.
-
Reminding students that Stop (say stop), Walk (away), and Talk (to an adult) are appropriate ways to
end/avoid negative online interactions.
-
Bullying counts online as much as in-person.
-
Reiterating that there will always be an adult ready to listen if students or someone they know is having
trouble with something online.
Please remind your child(ren) to report to an adult anything unsafe, troubling, or hurtful that occurs online or in-person. Being able to have open conversations about what our children may be seeing or experiencing is one of the most important steps we can take as a community.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's classroom teacher, our school social worker (Megan Devaney, x7154), school psychologist (Samantha Ide, x7106), or our school leaders (Andrea Simmons, x7127 and Luz Rivera, x7128)

Thank you / Gracias,
Mrs. Simmons
