Dear Oak Hills Families,


It is the last week of Semester 1 (18 weeks of school)! Thank you for partnering with your child's teachers and staff.


There is no school on Friday for students. It is Grading Day. Our office remains open from 7:30am-3:30pm.


February starts this week! This month, we will focus on themes centering Friendship, Kindness, Inclusiveness, and Integrity. There will be schoolwide activities highlighting acts of kindness.

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)


  • School Battles for 5th grade begin this week and continue for the 3rd and 4th grades.

  • Please email Lindsay Sandor, OBOB Volunteer Coordinator, at candlsandor@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer for school battles. We are scheduling time slots now!

  • To prepare your child for battles, now is a good time to review the titles and authors' correct name pronunciation and review the books with your child and jot notes of trivia in a notebook. Many of the OBOB questions will ask about names, places, lists, colors, descriptions, About the Author information, numbers and more. The more details they can remember, the better! Also practice the Practice Questions that are in your child’s school email.

PTO News

Movie Night--Thank you!


A BIG THANK YOU to the folks who showed up and made movie night spectacular! We had a great turn out, lots of folks brought dinner but there was lots of love for the concession stand. Thank you to the PTO, staff and volunteers, including the eighth graders who showed up for their younger siblings, for making such a special night happen.


Family Bingo Night


Save the date for Family Bingo Night March 10th from 6-8pm! If you would like to be involved in the planning of this event, please sign up on our 2023 Volunteer Spreadsheet. There are other events coming up that you can check out there as well.


Our next PTO meeting will be Feb 15th at 7pm both in-person and zoom. All are welcome! If you have agenda items to discuss, please email pto@oakhillspto.org.

Reminder that you MUST be registered in the MyImpact page through the school district to be able to volunteer or participate in any school event. Head to the BSD website for instructions.

Many volunteer opportunities are coming up in 2023, including Friendship Day Parties, workroom tours, Art Lit, staff appreciation, Reading Support, Read Across America, Field Trips and more. If you aren't currently receiving emails from Laura Hoffmann, and the Volunteer Committee, then you are NOT a part of the Oak Hills’ volunteer database. Head to the BSD website for instructions.


Friendship Parties

The requests and details for volunteers are going up on MyImpact. They are scheduled for Friday, February 10. Please sign up to spend time with your kiddo and their friends.


Seeking Crafty Paper Cricut Types

Ms. Larsen, our librarian, needs help making some bulletin board decor for Read Across America. If you are interested, please log in to MyImpact or contact Laura Hoffmann at OakHillsVC@gmail.com.


Keep an Eye Out

We are working on having some upcoming trainings for Workroom and and setting up some zoom workshops with Ms. Fischer the reading specialist to talk about the how and why you want to volunteer to help with reading in the classrooms. We will share more when we have the details.

We are getting reorganized post-pandemic! Action needed: if you’re not already, PLEASE take 4 minutes to register in MyImpact so you can stay up-to-date on happenings at school (even if you work during the day!). PTO After-School Club Opportunity and Updates

Chess Club Needs Volunteers


The current session of chess club runs through February 13th. We need a volunteer to lead the next session! You don't need to be a grand master - these kids just want the space to play chess with each other. If you are interested in helping (or forming other clubs), please contact pto@oakhillspto.org


New Session for Pokemon Trading Club!


PTO is hosting another 6-week session of Pokemon Trading Club open to all students! Wednesdays 2:35-3:10 from 2/15-3/22 in the gym.

Elementary Progress Reports (REPEAT)

Dear BSD Families,


We want to thank you for the work that you’re doing each and every day to support your child’s learning. We couldn’t do this without your partnership.


This year we have an updated Elementary Progress Report. Below you will find the key revisions/additions that were made:


  • Habits and Practices: This replaces the Behavior Learning Targets with a more student-centered approach that includes skills and practices that influence a child’s brain structure and the development of the brain’s executive function.

  • Language Arts/Math/Music/PE: These four sections both have Habits and Practices for their specific content area in addition to the Academic Learning Targets.

  • Science, Social Science, and Health: We are no longer using proficiency grading, but rather reporting on Habits and Practices for these specific content areas.

  • ELD: Reporting for students in English Language Development will now be included on this progress report instead of a separate document. If your student doesn’t receive ELD services, this section will remain blank.

  • Strengths and Goals: This replaces the Comment Box with a more asset-based approach to communicating student progress.


We are continuously striving to approach teaching and learning in a more inclusive and equitable way through an asset-based lens. All of our students have gifts and it is important to see them reflected in the communication with families. We hope that you find this document informative and that it provides a snapshot into your child’s progress as a student in the Beaverton School District.

Friendship Day on 2/10; Spirit Day and Buddy Classrooms Connect on 2/14

Friendship Day on 2/10; Spirit Day and Buddy Classrooms Connect on 2/14

In February, we will continue to focus on Inclusiveness, Friendship, Kindness, and Empathy.


On Friday, February 10th, classrooms will host a party and celebrate Friendship Day. Please read the message in the PTO section or contact your child's teacher for more information about volunteer opportunities.


What will take place on Friendship Day (2/10)?


* Students will deliver friendship letters and cards to their classmates. We are requesting that students include everyone in the class. Teachers will share a class roster with first names.


* We ask families to not gift any sweet treats or candy with the cards and letters. This guidance is in accordance to the District Wellness policy. We also want to be thoughtful about allergy-sensitive classrooms.


*Teachers will be keeping in mind the District Wellness policy and double checking food-related student allergies when planning snacks.


On Tuesday, 2/14, the theme for spirit day is Kind Otters. Students are encouraged to participate by wearing Otter, hearts, kindness, and friendship apparel.


All students will be engaging in a project with their Buddy Classrooms.

Immunization Exclusion Day- 2/15 (REPEAT)

State law requires that all children in public and private schools, preschools, Head Start and certified child care facilities have up-to-date immunizations or have a medical or nonmedical exemption.


Parents or guardians will receive a letter in early February if their child’s immunization record shows that he or she hasn't received the required vaccinations. Children won’t be able to attend school or child care starting February 15, if their records on file show missing immunizations.


The Beaverton School-Based Health Center and the Merlo School-Based Health Center are both resources for families in the Beaverton School District to get immunizations.

January 16, 2023-- Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and National Day of Service

Since its initial recognition and celebration in 1986, the third Monday in January has been observed each year as “a day on, not a day off.” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Hands On Greater Portland offers a variety of events and volunteer opportunities for folks looking to take part in community-based ways to honor the holiday.

Preparing for Inclement Weather

Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information

When we have inclement weather, school schedules could be affected. School closure or delayed start decisions will typically be communicated to media outlets and posted on the district website, ParentSquare and social media by 5:30 a.m. The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely, the ability of parents and students to drive safely, and the ability of students to walk safely. Decisions are made for the entire District. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.

Changes to Going Home Plans (Repeat)

Absences and dismissal changes can be reported to us via the Oak Hills website. There are buttons where you can click and report an absence or changes to how your child will be going home. For dismissal, please report the changes before 1:30 PM since this is when we will be delivering the information to our teachers and students. Thank you in advance for utilizing this communication tool. It will free up our phone lines for families, staff, and community members who urgently need to get in touch with the office.
