Cyclone Central Newsletter
August 14, 2020
Welcome Back Center Cyclones!
TEAM Center Families,
I hope this letter finds all of you well and enjoying the tail end of this very unique summer vacation. Our staff kicked-off the year with professional development this week, and we are excited to begin connecting with all of our Cyclone families!
As a Center TEAM, our goal is to provide a personalized, All-Access learning experience for all. During remote learning, this will include a blend of live whole-class Zoom meetings, small group Zoom instruction, individual conferences, independent learning time, online learning via programs such as Lexia and Dreambox, and social/emotional support provided through Morning Meetings, Lunch Bunches, and Closing Circles. Instruction will be both synchronous (whole class working together) and asynchronous (students working at their own pace) throughout each day. Brain breaks will also be embedded into each day to help students move, focus, and energize throughout their learning.
Throughout this school year, we will strive to be as flexible and responsive as possible while also providing consistency and structure for all learners. As we begin instruction, we know that all of our plans and instructional methods will not be perfect. As learning experiences are designed, we will continually reflect and revise. Your feedback will be welcomed and valuable to us as we work to make it the best possible remote learning experience for your child. I thank you all for your continued patience and flexibility as we work together to problem-solve and redesign the school day during these rapidly changing times.
Included in this newsletter are some further updates about our Remote Start. We look forward to connecting with all of you during next week's Parent/Child Phase-In meetings.
Your partner in education,
Mrs. Kate Rateno
Principal, Center Elementary School
Remote Specials Classes
We are excited to share that we are adding a new Project Based Learning class to our specials program this year. Mr. Jon Roy, who served as an interventionist at Center last school year, will be teaching this class. The class will teach students how to use the design process to create, invent, and explore authentic projects.
During remote learning, students will have specials every sixth day by grade level beginning on August 25th with 5th grade. A calendar has been provided below for quick reference. On these days, HR teachers will be holding a grade level meeting at 8:30 a.m. and then specials teachers will lead instruction after that. Specials days will follow the same instructional format as non-specials days.
Our Physical Education, Music, Art, and PBL teachers are currently working through the Design Cycle themselves to create these remote experiences for our students. They will provide more information as we finalized plans for these days.
