Introvert-Friendly Cooperative Learning
A few years ago, I shared Susan Cains Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking TED talk, in which she touched on some of the ways our focus on collaborative learning could be harming introverted students. She observed that schools “are designed mostly for extroverts and for extroverts’ need for lots of stimulation.... As for the kids who prefer to go off by themselves or just to work alone, those kids are seen as outliers often or, worse, as problem cases.”
Cain pointed to introverts like Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, and Gandhi, figures whose quiet demeanor shaped society. In catering to extroverts, she suggests that schools could be preventing some of the world’s future leaders and creative minds from thriving.
Now, teacher Bekah Landfair shares three ideas she has picked up for how to make group work more inviting for introverts.
Student of Distinction - Brooke Zitzloff
Congratulations to Brooke Zitzloff for being our March Student of Distinction. Brooke has been a very strong leader in her time here at BCMS. She is involved as a WEB leader, acts as a First Friend to many of our incoming new students, plays the flute in band, and is a part of the intramural Art Club. Thank you Brooke for being such a great representation for what BCMS stands for!
8th Grade Spring Class Talk
I met with 8th grade students this past week. The kids were absolutely wonderful! They were very respectful and attentive throughout our time. We recorded this video so you could hear what was said at the meeting and be able to reinforce it in your class. The recording was taken from the mezzanine where a primetime was having an activity, so I apologize for the student noise in the background, but it did not come from the gymnasium. Here is the link to the document that was referenced at the last grade level meeting. When you add students to the sheet, please send me an email giving me a heads up with the students name so I can contact those students and parents.
