Midway Mustang Memo
November 2017
Dear Parents,
The month of November is quickly coming to a close and as we approach Thanksgiving we are reminded of our many blessings. How thankful we are to have kind and respectful students who show joy in learning every day. Our teachers and parents partner so that we can reach our common goals. Community support is evident as many volunteers are active in our school. Thank you for all that you do to support Midway—it is because of your support that our students are successful.
Thank you for participating in our P.T.O. sponsored Fun Run! We were able to raise enough money to purchase the additional book shelves and tables needed for the media center. The Veteran’s Day celebration was a huge success! Many thanks to our receptionist Martha Greschner for coordinating this event. We had about 40 guests that were recognized--what a wonderful way to honor those who have served in the military! We also celebrated our leaders at our November E.L.M (Extraordinary Leadership Models) award ceremony for their ability to Begin With the End in Mind. Our Midway learners practiced this Leader in Me Habit over the month of October, and these students were selected by teachers for showing skills in setting and attaining goals. Many thanks to our partners in education, like Northside Hospital, who provide funding for the awards and breakfast.
As we continue in our journey to teach the social emotional competencies, it is evident that “every child is capable of learning these skills—we just have to teach them.“ There are some simple strategies listed for parents to practice with their children of all ages to help them manage their emotions and sharpen their Social Emotional Skills in this linked article.
We wish you a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday!
With kind regards,
Jan Munroe, Principal
Daphne Rogers, Assistant Principal
Ashley Starr, Administrative Assistant

Parent Feedback Needed!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Parents,
We need your help! We are looking for your feedback. We would like for you to complete the Georgia Parent Survey. It contains 24 questions. You may complete the survey using your personal computer, smartphone, or tablet. The data collected from the survey will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating, which is an indicator in our academic accountability system, the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI). Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis.

This month students have been working hard on several things with me. One very important topic I co-taught with Mrs. Emmert, our ITS, is internet safety. We discussed how to be safe, what to do if someone wants your private information or you see something that makes you feel bad, and how to be a good digital citizen. It is recommended you closely monitor your child’s online activities. Discuss what is private information and why it’s important not to share it online with just anyone. Be aware of social networking sites such as Musical.ly, Snapchat, and Facebook. There is an age requirement for a reason. Although chatting, emailing, and texting are a fast way to communicate it is often easy to misinterpret what is being said.
Here are some other topics we worked on:
Third Grade: How to solve problems/conflicts with others.
Fourth Grade: Learning Styles
Fifth Grade: Career Research and project presentation
Have a safe and relaxing holiday break,

STEM News
All 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students will be coding in the lab the last week before Thanksgiving Break. Check in with your computer programmer and see what they are working on and how many lines of code they can write. They can work on Code.org over the break!
Hope you have a super restful Thanksgiving and enjoy your family time together! See you back in the lab the week of November 27- December 1st!
Love,

From the Midway Café
We’re having a great November here in the Midway Café. November is “Thankful Month”, and we are thankful for each of you and your students. They are why we do what we do each day. Thankful for the smiles we get to see and happy to help take care of feeding them while they are away from home. Our winter menu started this month, and on it we have some different, yummy items to help get us through the cold months ahead. There are grilled cheese sandwiches with soups, a new carrot recipe with rich cinnamon and nutmeg, pasta with meatballs, healthy side salads made with spring mix, spinach or kale, and we still have all their favorites too!
Our harvest of the month is kale and lettuces, and our Strong 4 Life focus is on drinking more water and less sugary drinks, continuing our healthy habits for a healthy life.
We also want to let you know that we have a spice station the students may use each day. There they can try some new seasonings or just add their favorites to their meals. Encourage your child to experiment with some of the items we offer on their fruits and veggies. Sometimes a new twist on an old dish is just what’s needed.
We want to thank you again for sharing your students with us each day, and hope you have a wonderful break with your family, friends, good food and happy memories made!
