Dear Parents and Guardians
We are so excited to have started the new school year. There are a few changes that I would like to share with you. One of the more significant changes is that we will be able to offer our students around 20 minutes to eat during lunch time. In the past, the lunch period lasted 30 minutes- 10 minutes of recess, around 10 minutes to go through the line, and 10 minutes to eat. As you can tell from this, it did not allow students enough time to really enjoy their lunch. Currently, the students have their morning recess right before lunch which lasts 10 minutes, then we have 5 minutes to transition into the building and to the lunchroom. After the students get into the lunchroom, they go through the line which can take up to 10 minutes. Usually our lunchroom staff have the all sitting before that. When the students finally sit down, they have 20 minutes to eat their lunch. After their lunch time comes to a conclusion, they are dismissed and ushered back to their classroom where the teachers are waiting for them either in the wall way or outside of their classroom.
Another change for this year, is the 1st graders will always be dismissed from the gym. The reason for this is that this year, 1st grade has specials at the end of the day and they are closer to the gym than to their classrooms and playground.
As the school year gets going, we really want you to encourage you to work with us regarding attendance. We need all of the students to be present at school unless they are sick. If they are sick, please call the office regardless of the time and leave a voice message so we can accurately know why students are missing. Last year, we made a significant growth in minimizing students’ tardiness and absences. We still have a log of work to do so please work with us to make sure our students are at school so we can keep making learning an everyday activity.

Estimados Padres y Guardianes

School Safety
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. During the year, our school has fire, tornado, and intruder drills. The drills ensure our students and staff are prepared for potential emergencies. Watch for future newsletter updates that give you information on our drills, so you can continue the safety conversations with your child(ren) at home.
Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. The system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered.
For more information about school safety, visit our website at: http://www.siouxcityschools.org/safety/ or speak to our principal.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call school office at 712-279-6834.
Seguridad Escolar

September: Attendance Awareness Month
The Sioux City Community School District recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success. So, we’ve joined a nationwide effort to celebrate Attendance Awareness Month in September. Nationwide, far too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year—or about 18 days – for any reason, excused or unexcused. Research shows that’s the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance.
During Attendance Awareness Month, we are asking you to help us reduce absenteeism locally by taking these steps:
• Build a habit and a culture of regular attendance.
• If there are challenges that make it difficult for your student to attend school, let us know so we can help.
