Ask-N-Switch
An impromptu Review Game and Cooperative Learning Strategy
Ask-N-Switch
Grades: 2-12
Big Idea: Students create review questions and take turns asking/answering the review questions
Directions:
1. At the end of a unit of study, give each student an index card.
2. Each student writes a question that could be found on the unit test. On the back, they write the answer to their question.
3. Meet with a partner to make sure the question is relevant, easily understood, and that the answer is correct.
4. Students find a different partner. They take turns asking questions on their cards and answering each other's questions.
5. Repeat the process with new partners until time is up.
The index cards that contained their own questions and answers became our set of review cards. The preparation took approximately 3-4 minutes. In order to come up with a question, they had to reflect on their learning which required them to think deeper. ALSO, we have a set of review cards that we can use again tomorrow!
When to Use: At the end of a unit, to prepare for a test, to check students' comprehension.
Strategy Variations:
A teacher could give a bunch of answers on index cards. Partners could practice writing questions that would work for the answers.
Collect all completed cards. Students could play Jeopardy with the questions.
