Long Way Gone

Ishmael Beah

Internal Characterization

on page 29, ishmael says that because he was so hungry, he had to steal food from people while they slept. Ishmael most likely would've not done this regularly, but in his condition it was the only thing he could do to keep himself alive. The occcurence of the war had changed his characterization, in a bad way.

Historical Connection

This book relates to the recent Paris attack because both incidents have a group of people attacking a group of indecent people and the government. In the Paris attack, Isis bombed many places and had a mass shooting at a theater. In "A Long Way Gone", the rebels are attacking villages and threatening to kill them if they don't join the rebel's side.

Setting

Conflict #1

As Ishmael and his friends are trying to protect themselves and the try to find their families in the middle of a civil war. People were scared of others the same age as Ishmael because they were intimidated by them. This was a consequence of the war. People stopped trusting each other, and every stranger became an enemy. This made them get stopped by many groups of people who want them to be afraid so Ishmael won't hurt them.

Conflict #2

Late one night, the Rebels attacked unexpectedly. There was no rumors about the rebels coming. They just walked into the village out of no where. This makes Ishmael worry because he always had they feeling he was about to be killed.
