Eilat is the southernmost city in the State of Israel and only adjacent to the Red Sea. It serves as a port city and a tourist and is located in the Arava. The city belongs to the southern district. Past as a settlement called , and the more distant past as the "Etzion man." In 1949 the site was conquered in its War of Independence and was primarily used as a military camp. Eilat was established as a civilian settlement in 1952 and became a city in 1959.
