A Message from Tedd
March 17, 2023
WEbster Nation,
Happy St. Patrick's Day! With exhibition just a few short weeks away, we are giddy to have you come see what we've been up to and also a little nuts trying to wrap up so many wonderful projects. In the meantime, we had an incredible Jog-A-Thon today and look forward to the big Talent Show next week. Before I forget, much like we did for Winter Break, I'd love to gather ONE GREAT PHOTO from your Spring Break adventures and dedicate a portion of the first April newsletter to highlighting our community. Keep that in mind when you're out there in the world or bouncing around locally.
Enjoy the newsletter...enjoy your weekend!
With gratitude,
Tedd
AN EXHIBITION OF LEARNING?
What is it exactly that we are celebrating at our first Exhibition of Student Learning? Do you remember the old Science Fair? While many students certainly did their own work, conducted their own experiments, and should be proud of their efforts, far too often these events celebrated the wrong thing. They were driven by the perfection of the final product. Many students stood next to some unbelievable project with which they had little or nothing to do. Mom and dad were often the architects of these offerings because they knew it would be a big part of their child's science grade that semester and they wanted them to look good in front of the rest of the school. These students had a canned speech and rattled off a list of things they had prepared the night before. You remember.
Well...our exhibition IS NOT THAT.
It is instead a celebration of the process of inquiry and learning. It is an authentic opportunity for our students to discuss their struggles and successes, their curiosity and wonder, and communicate to all of you the thinking and learning that came to light along the way. They are not receiving grades for these projects. Rather they have received and will continue to receive formative feedback. In addition, they are developing the ability to provide constructive feedback to others. Will there be some imperfect results? Boy, I certainly hope so. Failure is the most optimum place for growth...so long as students aren't terrified of it. We're all going to make mistakes and experience failure along the way. Let's learn to improve and grow from those experiences.
This is our first attempt at this as a staff as well. Are there places where we can learn and grow and improve? For sure...and we will do exactly that in the months to come. But keep in mind that if we expect our students to take risks, try things, rise to challenges, and express creativity, then this process must become a foundation of our school culture. We must all participate and commit to the process of ideation, design, and reflection.
At Webster, we're going to take big swings, give kids real things to think about and real problems to solve, and challenge our staff to do the same. We're going to try things and reflect on the outcomes and be committed to growth mindsets. This is what the world is screaming for from our students. So...when you come for Exhibition on March 30, @ 6:00pm, you are coming to witness the beginning of something different...a more authentic exploration of learning. We are beyond excited to have you join us.
RUN, WEBSTER, RUN!
They came, they saw, they RAN. What an awesome day!!! We were so touched by how our students supported each other throughout the Jog-A-Thon. Thank you so much to Jessica Butler Bell and our incredible PTA for your efforts in organizing this special event. I can't tell you how happy it makes me when we get a chance to welcome you all on campus for events like these. And to those of you who helped to set up, break down, track laps, serve food, and so much more, thank you for being a part of our tribe. It means everything! It took a serious bunch of parents to pull this off and we are grateful to you for your support. Congrats to Nyla Wallace for her winning logo design and helping us create such cool shirts. We were lucky to have new dad and DJ extraordinaire, Joel Dunn, on hand to keep things funky...thank you, my friend. And most of all, kuddos to our kiddos for raising funds, running your tails off, and being genuinely awesome humans. Great work, everybody!! I am filled with pride today. Shout out to the Kona Ice Truck for the cold treats!

FOOD TRUCKS
In preparation for the launch of their own food trucks, K-1 got a chance to take a special tour of the Kona Ice Truck this week. Students got to go inside and learn about the way things work behind the scenes. Mrs. Berman, Mrs. Cooper, and Mrs. Murdock opened their own food truck with the kids this week. Yum in a Bun was a huge hit as our team served hot dogs to the students to give them a taste of the experience. Hope you're ready for some delicious treats at our Exhibition, as K-1's food truck extravaganza will be on full display in the auditorium on the evening of March 30. The weekly newsletter supports our K-1 Exhibition advertisers and want to share their print ads with you again this week. Come hungry!!
2nd GRADE STILL DIGGING IN
This week, Mrs. Harris's class used dichotomous keys to sort "Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans."
5TH GRADERS ROCK THE MIC
Monday's Poetry Slam was a huge success as our 5th graders shared original poems under the tree of life in Poet's Park. Students wrote about a wide variety of topics. The audience laughed, cried, reflected, answered cliff hangers, and reveled in the creative wonder presented by our students. There was even a little friendly banter as Rem and Mrs. London participated in a poetry battle based around their varying perspectives about NFL quarterbacks. All in all, we were delighted with the safe and encouraging space created by the students for each other to share these beautiful works of art. For different kids, speaking on stage like this is either a joyful or absolutely terrifying experience. It was really cool to see them cheer each other on. We'd like to extend our sincere gratitude to Jolynn Regan, Ricardo Means, Nathan Hassall, Kristin Riesgo, and Amanda Rigali for their expertise and dedication in leading our students through this wonderful program. In addition, kuddos to Ms. Johnson and Mrs. London for their love and support throughout the process. You are amazing educators and this couldn't have happened without you.
Finally, I'd like to share a poem written by Poppy Fischbach. It speaks directly to this 5th grade group with a deep understanding of the impacts of unkindness and a little hope for the future. Beautiful work, Poppy.
BULLYING
By Poppy Fischbach
Tears have been cried
Like a rough ride
Hearts have shattered
Why do we do this?
Why don't we change?
We're not too late
Don't bully
Use your heart fully
Give love
And don't shove
Love should be showed
There should be a truck load
Let's make way for new
You can too
COLLEGE KIDS GIVING BACK AT WEBSTER
A huge thank you to our neighbors in the north for coming out in the storm and putting on such a fun and engaging evening of science for our kids and families. We are lucky to have so many Pepperdine faculty woven into our community and hope that we can continue to strengthen our connection in the coming years. Students participated in a variety of activities on Tuesday night and had a blast with our gracious hosts. A special shout out to Thomas Vandergon and his group for making this evening happen.
A LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Congrats to Webster's own, Rem Sokoloff, for taking the initiative to write a letter to the editor of The Malibu Times. Interested in educating his community on the importance of grey water, Rem took it upon himself to send his thoughts to the local paper. That initiative was rewarded with the publication of his letter in the March 9th edition of the Malibu Times. Thinking about our growth mindsets, way to TAKE ACTION, Rem. Love it.
WE WELCOME AND APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT
There are a lot of things happening in the next few months and the PTA is a massive part of making them happen. Please stay connected, help out where you can, and jump in where it makes sense for you and your family. We appreciate your support and want to do everything we can to be there for our incredible PTA.
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR TALENT SHOW
We're looking for volunteers to mentor our Student Stage Crew! Check out our signup and considering helping our talented Webster Whales: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0d4ba9ad22a3f85-talent#/.
Thank you for helping us create these amazing events for our kids! We truly couldn't do it without your support!
AI AND LEARNING
Many of you may already be familiar with Khan Academy as a great supplemental resource for learning. While I may not be a fan of everything Khan believes in, I certainly respect his commitment to education and his desire to think about its future. This week, Mrs. London got a message from Mr. Khan that she found quite interesting and shared it with me. Here is a sample:
Hi Kristina London,
As artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT become more common in our daily lives, you may be curious about what it means for you and your students.
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn about AI—how it works, what its benefits and challenges are, and what some emerging practices for teachers might be for how to use it. That's why we've created a new AI for education course that includes some lessons designed specifically for teachers.
Here’s a sample of what you’ll learn:
• What AI is good at (and not-so-good at yet)
• Some benefits and challenges of using AI in the classroom
• How to talk to your students about AI and help them use it appropriately and responsibly
I wanted to include it here simply as something you might explore. It is certainly something we will take a look at as a staff. As I discussed above, we are going to look at new ideas, find engaging ways to connect with students, and make sure that we are educating them for the future they will inherit...not our collective past.

BEHAVIOR:
We know the talent show creates a ton of excitement and a lot of crazy energy. We understand and really love this about the event. However, a lot of people will give of their time and efforts to make this such a special day for us all. Disrespectful, inappropriate, mean, irresponsible, and out of control behavior will simply not be tolerated throughout the process of rehearsals and showtime. You and your act will be given 2 warnings. If the behavior continues, you will not be allowed to perform. We know you can pull it together. You got this!

Developing character and growth mindsets is invaluable and will be a major focus of ours here at Webster over the years. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity and kindness. In addition, we will notice and value it in each other.
