LSPS Non-Homestead Millage Renewal Passed
Thank You Voters
Lake Shore Public Schools Non-Homestead Millage Renewal PASSED!
We want to sincerely thank all of YOU for coming together to support our Lake Shore Public Schools.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio wrote, "This vital piece of our budget accounts for nearly $2.6 million annually. The millage rate has been reduced over the past several years due to the rising property values. The results from yesterday’s election will not only restore the millage rate to its previous level, but also secure this funding mechanism for our district for the next decade."
OUR Community. OUR Future. Thanks for voting YES to OUR schools!

4th annual Wellness Spirit Week
Our 4th annual Wellness Spirit Week, taking place from March 4th-8th, is a week-long campaign to drive home the message that you are important.

Second grade teacher Hannah Bruce at Violet Elementary understands the importance of creating a classroom culture where students feel comfortable sharing their thinking and taking risks. This culture is modeled as she explained this success story during a number talks lesson:
"Number talks are designed to be student centered by having students take the lead on solving math problems any way they choose. One day after a Number Talk, a 2nd grader came up to me to tell me how much she loved doing the number talk and expressed confidence in herself as a mathematician. I was ecstatic that I successfully created norms that helped students feel comfortable and confident in sharing their mathematical thinking. As a prior student who spent math class filled with embarrassment and anxiety, this truly felt like a success!"
What a perfect example of how to help students overcome their own brick walls and attain better mental health.
Lake Shore is dedicated to providing our students with whatever they need to succeed. To access our Resource page, visit https://www.lakeshoreschools.org/safety_and_security.
The Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library
We are enthusiastic about books and how our elementary schools will begin reading the same book, The Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein.
When Kyle Keeley learns that the world's world’s most famous game maker, Luigi Lemoncello, has designed the town’s new library and is having an invitation-only lock-in on opening night, Kyle is determined to be there! But the tricky part isn’t getting into the library—it’s getting out. Because when morning comes, the doors stay locked. Kyle and the other kids must catch every clue and solve every puzzle to find the hidden escape route!
The One Book, One School initiative has been coordinated by Mrs. Husek at Violet Elementary since 2017. Like previous years, our reading committees chose this book because it is an easy and accessible read for families. Joining her leadership is Mrs. Peacock at Masonic Heights and Ms. Semack at Rodgers.
At their kickoff magic assembly, Violet Elementary Principal Ms. Grassi shared reading goals, filling students with excitement: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IQPEjNAcCh9VlPDhMy6fgBsjc1p9Ab85/view?usp=sharing
Every family in grades K-5+GSRP received one copy of the book, using at-risk grant funding, with a coordinated reading schedule which is to be completed at home with families. There will be questions and conversations. There will be fun trivia games, daily and monthly prizes, and other themed events!
Follow along with our March is Reading Month calendars to review the elementary schedules: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zgqkYt-jizo5-PJ0pcYaxbnKSO0_eE6Sm8Z7UDHb73Y/edit?usp=sharing

HUMILITY
People with the character strength of humility do not seek the spotlight. They let their actions speak for themselves.
Excellence in teaching deserves to be recognized. Lake Shore Public Schools proudly announces the following 2024 Teachers of the Year:
- Masonic Heights Elementary's Alexa Materna
- Rodgers Elementary's JoMarie Ventimeglia
- Violet Elementary's Rene Foster
- Kennedy Middle School's Katherine Panoff
- Lake Shore High School's Paige May
These educators are recognized for their excellence in content knowledge, classroom management, and passion. They inspire our students by awakening belief in self, manifesting talents, and being the light. They are truly humble.
Thank you to all 200+ educators at Lake Shore Public Schools for being superhuman. You influence our youth in the most powerful way and we want to share how much we love all of our teachers!
LOVE OF LEARNING
People with the character strength of love of learning master new topics on their own or in school. Junior and Varsity Swimmer Vincent Brannon loves learning the sport and puts in a lot of energy to another interest.
PAST
On Friday, February 24th, 2023 the Boys Swim team won the Silver Division Championship at Lake Shore High School, defeating 4 other teams to bring home the win.
For Vincent, this win felt great, but his journey didn't begin so strong. As an underclassmen, he knew he needed his times to improve. He described this as a battle of me versus me. He went to the gym, branched out to compete in different races, and found himself more ready.
PRESENT
Through experience, he learned that it is okay to feel pain because that pain is knowledge of pushing himself. He also has realized that swim is simply a hobby, one that helps him condition. His real passion is for drumming.
Vincent loves playing the pit and snare drum. He started in 7th grade at Kennedy Middle School and found himself practicing regularly after school. This musician has always enjoyed all genres of music, but he's an old soul. Earth, Wind, and Fire is an all-time favorite.
FUTURE
Vincent is part of Lake Effect Percussion, an indoor percussion ensemble from Gibraltar and competes in the Michigan Alliance for Performing Arts on March 2nd at WGI White Lake. We're excited to hear about this experience and look forward to the results from his swim season as well!
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Wellness Spirit Week (3/4-8) and OPM - Identifying and appreciating the good in others (3/11-15).

Amplify CKLA in Action
Lake Shore Public Schools invited Representative Alicia St. Germain, Chair of Economic Development and Small Business, Representative Regina Weis, Chair of School Aid and Education Committee, and Sen. Darren Camilleri, Chair of PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee, to visit elementary classrooms for an up-close look a Core Knowledge Language Arts curriculum in action. Their visit today included a student performance from Masonic Melodies, classroom visits, and intervention observations.
Elementary teachers from Masonic Heights Elementary completed Amplify CKLA training in August. Amplify CKLA is based on research showing that closing the background knowledge gap is necessary for closing the reading gap and ensuring equity for all students. To that end, Amplify CKLA teaches literacy through the lens of cross-curricular domains in science, history, literature, and culture. It was developed in response to research that shows the critical impact of background knowledge on reading comprehension and college- and career-readiness.
Our teachers continue to facilitate transformational learning experiences for Lake Shore students. During this visit, Teacher Mrs. Thomas used so many strategies that moved her students beyond the traditional low-level type of thinking about literacy, reading, and engaging with text. She said, "Students are learning about rock cycles, types of mountains, and different sea animals through engaging in inquiry. The best part is I am also learning beside them." She used many strategies such as reading independently, playing a recording, turning to a neighbor for discussion, and sharing aloud. The legislators were impressed with Amplify and its ability to create next-level literacy growth by observing students learning the components of reading in real time.
Thank you Mrs. Wischmeyer, Mrs. Thomas, and Ms. Habrowski and Masonic Melodies and 4th and 1st grade students for your hospitality. We also appreciate Mrs. Sam and Mrs. Ottinger for showing us the Intervention Center.
We appreciated their focus on our work, partnering with Amplify, to create literacy instructional experiences that are centered on Science based reading instruction, with core knowledge and skills as the foundations of the learning experience.
Market Day
Our 2nd graders at Masonic Heights Elementary have been working hard on creating paper products to sell during their Market Day. They've created store fronts to share our products as well. This is their big project for their Economics unit, raising money for the Lake Shore Family Assistance Program.
All items were priced $0.25 to $1.00. Customers paid with quarters as students are learning about quarters and counting change in their math unit.
Penny Liden made colorful pictures. She thoughtfully explained, "I am a mini artist and wanted to make others happy by drawing for them."
The 2nd graders came up with a variety of ideas such as pencil holders, airplanes, notebooks, flags, cupcakes, cootie catchers, and octopi! We really enjoyed Sam Bross and Eliana Leach's bookmarks, in perfect time for March is Reading Month. Sam expressed his love for The Lemonade War while Eliana enjoys the Judy B. Junes series.
In 2023 our 2nd grade donated all of the proceeds, $667.37 from Market Day, to the Lake Shore Family Assistance Foundation. We are so proud of their hard work and generosity and appreciative of staff for organizing this project! Way to go, Tigers!
Bonus: Generosity is ongoing with our community partners. The Shorewood Kiwanis Club has generously donated a book for every student K-5 at Masonic Heights Elementary! There were tables inside the media center filled with picture books, nonfiction books, and chapter books for our Tigers to choose from!
Dr. Carl Papa, President of the St. Clair Shores Kiwanis, loves kids and books and has made it a personal goal to gift free books to every school within the Shores in 2-3 years!
Books are paper products we can all enjoy!

Bikes in Adaptive PE
It's like riding a bike. This simile means that once the skill in learned, it is never forgotten.
The thing is, for many of our MoCI students, they were given the opportunity to ride for the first time in Mrs. Belanger's classes at Rodgers Elementary and Kennedy Middle School. First grader Liam Gierak was a bit apprehensive at first, but has learned how-to get on and off the bike, stop using both brakes, learning to balance, and steer. It is impressive.
Mrs. Belanger and her team of paraprofessionals enjoy pushing them around, watching them gain confidence and find ways to plant themselves inside the bicycle baskets. Paraprofessional Shelby Owens is a Lake Shore Class of 2018 graduate who enjoys working alongside students with cognitive disabilities. It is her way of paying it forward.
The bikes were purchased to update equipment for the Adaptive PE program using a special education grant. The Lake Shore Foundation paid for the bikes to be assembled!
Thank you Mrs. Belanger for always coming up with a variety creative physical activities to develop cognitive, social, motor, communication, functional life and vocational skills. You rock!
Adult Enrichment and Crafting
Lake Shore Adult and Community Education (LSSACE) provides classes, programs, events and services.
Basket Weaving Adult Enrichment program taught by Amy Jorgensen gives participates the opportunity to learn techniques to make three (3) different baskets. A seasonal basket, a Twill market basket and a round seagrass basket. Participants brought scissors, pencil, dishpan, tape measure, flat screwdriver, and two (2) dozen clip clothespins to class.
Participant Cherie Rice registers for every Basket Weaving class we offer and has made roughly 100 baskets since 2013. She's an avid crafter and makes it her mission to learn something new every year. She said, "I enjoy beading, making chains, knitting, completing 1,000 piece puzzles, working with floral design, and wood burning." Her latest triumph, at 86 years old, is having her first book published. The best part? She donates these items to charity!
First-time weaver Lynn Cossarek, another crafter, enjoyed creating different weave patterns and the talented teacher. She complimented Amy's patience and willingness to help. Once finished, she plans on keeping her basket to admire at home because she's proud of the work she put into it.
LSSACE has been in operation for over 50 years, providing quality education programs to the community. We are proud to provide high demand community programs such as High School Equivalency (GED), Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL) and High School Completion (HSC) courses. LSSACE has also been promoting and providing enrichment based programs including art, music, theater, dance, and many other disciplines to both children and adults.
Visit https://lsps.ce.eleyo.com/ to browse and register current programming.
Bonus: Jessica Darling and Amy Wojciechowski run an after school crafting class at Rodgers Elementary. The projects that resulted from their efforts are incredible!
Passion Projects in Tech Ed
Welcome to Mr. Carito's Tech Ed classroom at North Lake High School.
As you enter, you will feel like you have suddenly entered Home Depot. There's the distinct smell of wood and plenty of tools on display and in student's hands.
At the beginning of the year, students were introduced to many projects that were predetermined by their teacher. However, student passion projects and community projects are on always their goal list, too. Students learn how-to use a scroll saw, bandsaw, drill press, miter saw, table saw, drills, sanders, and routers to create projects. They are able to research ideas from their own classroom library which is filled with woodworking magazines and reference materials.
Senior Maddy Vanderhoff demonstrated from start to finish the process of creating a bee palisman while Junior Lillian Glambin shared cutouts of her birth year.
A transfer student from Lake Shore High School, one of Lillian's first classes at North Lake was Tech Ed and she admitted that she was "so scared." She described that cutting objects did not come easy for her at first, but that she bravely stuck with it. Now she feels confident in her own abilities.
Maddy loves the class. She said, "It is hands-on and way better than the traditional class."
The Lake Shore Foundation has donated over $7,000 to fund these projects. With 14 years of teaching experience, 12 at North Lake, and his experience with woodworking, Mr. Carito enjoys helping his 10 students make art out of wood. He is always looking for clearance deals at Menards, donations, and bringing in his own materials to further skillsets. He shared. "When students put in the effort, great work results. I enjoy exposing them to things they've never seen or tried before."
One of the projects they made were 100 trees using a pile of scrap wood. They used the miter saw to cut the triangle shape and drill and nail guns to adhere an ornament. They stained and painted them. The goal is to gift them to every adult in the building. We appreciate the hard work of Leith Shaffer, Roland Shaffer, and Jordan Young.
Owls were also made and presented to our Board of Education for Board Recognition Month. The picture doesn't even come close to showing the incredible craftsmanship. What a gift!
Thank you, Mr. Carito and students for sharing your Tech Ed classroom at North Lake High School with all of us! To view additional projects, follow the class on Instagram at @northlaketeched
Celebration
100th Day of School
The 100th day of school, a perfect reason to celebrate!
Our elementary students moved through stations that had everyone counting, demonstrating their newly acquired knowledge of numbers and quantities up to 100. We loved seeing them work together to read 100 books, stack 100 cups, create trail mix using 100 snacks, design a crafty 100's day hat, and make a 100's day gumball machine! Poster projects adorned the walls with 100 items attached.
Kindergarteners and their teachers from Rodgers Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school by dressing like they imagine 100 year olds would!
Fifth grader London Humphrey was invited to celebrate with her Kindergarten buddy Kennedi at Masonic Heights Elementary. She said, "I really enjoy talking and playing with her. The 100s day activities were so much fun!"
The 100th day of school is a day worth celebrating with gusto and Lake Shore Public Schools truly knows how to throw a party. The 100th Centennial Celebration continues until this year's 101st graduating class walks across the stage in June.
Bonus: These photos from our 100 year celebrations are heartstoppers, so emotionally gripping as to make one's heart seem to stop beating -- SO CUTE!
Mrs. Davis, certified CPR instructor and mom at Violet Elementary, facilitated a hands-on cardiopulmonary resuscitation session with 5th graders. We are so fortunate to have our All-Stars begin mastery of this important skill to increase the likelihood of helping someone survive cardiac arrest!
