## Highlights From Last Week....

We had a GREAT week of learning! In ELA, we focused on the question "What can I do?" and continued to learn about rhyming words and began learning about syllables in words. We practiced "clapping" words and names and identified how many syllables we heard. We are done being introduced to the capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet and their sounds. We will take a closer look at each letter in later weeks. It is so much fun to sing "The Alphabet Song" and look for things around us that start with letters and sounds of our own name. We will continue to practice turning and talking.

In Math, we worked on finding hidden partners in numbers. For instance, in the number five, two hidden partners might be 2 and 3 or 1 and 4. The children loved playing math detectives to find out the hidden partners in numbers. We will also learned about the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3. Number chants will be used in class to help us learn how to write the numbers. These chants will be shared with you at home so you can continue to help your child practice the correct number formation.

## A peek at our learning this week...

This week will be very busy!

This week our class will be focusing on ways in which friends get along with each other. Children will be reading stories about how friends share, take turns, and resolve conflicts, or problems, with one another.

Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout

• Vocabulary: friend, problem Have your child talk about the ways he or she solves a problem with a friend. Encourage your child to act out with you a solution to a problem he or she has experienced with a friend.
• My Words to Know

High-Frequency Word: the Have your child find the word the in the title of a favorite book. Then ask your child to write the word and use it in a sentence.

Category Words: feeling words Draw happy and sad faces on index cards. Ask questions and invite your child to hold up a feeling card that answers each question. Then draw more faces to show other feelings and make up questions to go with them.

Phonics: m Write words that begin or end with m on sticky notes. Have your child circle the m in each word, then find objects that begin/end with m and place a sticky note on them.

In Math, we will work on decomposing numbers to 3 and learn that 1+2=3. We will also start looking at numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3. We will learn how to write the numbers and use the numeral to represent a quantity.

We will begin our unit on weather this week.
