Principal's Update
March 2021
Dear Students & Families,
This newsletter is shorter than normal because we had a lot of information communicated last week.
February E.E.E. Students of the Month
- Engaged - Students that take an active role in their education and are deeply engaged in the learning.
- Empathetic - Students that show caring towards their classmates and school staff.
- Endurance - Students that stick with difficult problems and show resilience when things don't go well.
Students of the month:
- Arts = Trinity Reis - She consistently has her camera on, participates in class, and turns in quality work.
- CTE = Gabe Henderson - In sports medicine, Gabe has produced exemplary work. He is also a highly active participant in class, and communicates regularly with his teacher. These three traits are just a few of the reasons why it is a pleasure having him in class.
- English = Nikki Hill - She consistently participates in class and chat, has her camera on, gets her work turned in and maintains a great attitude. She's always smiling on camera and contributes every class.
- Health & PE = Branden Correy - Branden is a joy to have in class. He engages in zoom and asynchronous lessons, asks thoughtful questions and participates when many others don't. Branden communicates with me regarding missing class and comes to office hours to check in regarding his grade and to get clarification on assignments. He works hard and has a positive attitude, which is greatly appreciated! Keep it up Branden, you rock!
- HVA =Jonathan Navarrete - Jonathan has shown that he has the Endurance needed to come from behind and get caught up in his Edgenuity courses. He has continued to work hard and is now ahead of schedule (in the Green Zone) in four of his courses and is earning excellent grades in all six courses! Way to go, Jonathan!
- Math =Sammar Thandi - Sammar has demonstrated terrific engagement throughout the school year. His textbook assignments consistently demonstrate thorough investigation, diagrams, and explanations. He prepares carefully for every quiz and exam, getting help as needed to ensure he has thoroughly mastered the content. His energetic participation in group work inspires others to participate, as well. I can always count on Sammar to strive for excellence.
- Science = Ellie Kopp - She has completed all of her assignments on time and scored high. She has also done a great job of communicating.
- Social Studies = Torin Jones - Torin has done a fabulous job this year advocating for herself in CWI. She has demonstrated both engagement and endurance by communicating on a regular basis with me and asking clarifying questions about class. In addition, Torin also makes time to check in with me to see how I'm doing, which is something I really appreciate. Torin has made online teaching much more enjoyable by making the extra effort to reach out.
- World Languages = Indya Correa. - She always has her camera on and participates. Her smiling face and willingness to engage is fun to see. She also completes everything on time and shows she is ready to learn
Peer Tutoring Center Changes
With the start of in-person learning, the Peer Tutoring center will be closed the first week (March 8-12.)
We'll re-open on Tuesday, March 16, with a new schedule to accommodate in-person class schedules and to avoid conflicts with after school clubs and activities.
The new peer tutoring center schedule will be on Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays from 1:00-1:30. Students who are not in person can log in and get some extra support.
The location will still be on zoom at https://hocksd.zoom.us/j/85465581054 .
Parent Teacher Conferences March 29-April 1
We have two types of conferences.
1. Referral Conferences - These are driven by teacher recommendation. Any student who has 3 or more teachers that would like to meet with the family, will have a full team meeting scheduled. Becky Hawkins from our office will call and arrange these.
2. Scheduled Arena Conferences - Historically teachers would all be in the commons and parents could just bounce between them. This year, we can't do that. We are going to schedule 15 minute windows to meet with teachers via Zoom. You will sign up for times via Skyward. We will share how to do that and a list of the zoom links with you on the week of March 22nd.

Band Update
On another "note", pep band season is here! The band is making magic happen in supporting our football team at each home game this season. With musician masks and bell covers furnished by the district and uniforms outfitted by the booster club, we are able to adhere to the COVID safety guidelines by limiting the group to 50 students. You can sometimes hear the band practicing 3 days a week after school, twice for the entire band and once for just the drum line. To stay up to date with everything Hockinson Band, check us out on www.facebook.com/hockinsonband.
Save The Date! Spring is approaching and the Hockinson Music Boosters will be having the annual MOTHER'S DAY PLANT SALE this spring. More details coming soon.
