BRHS Learning Plan 2020-2021
Face-to-Face vs. Asynchronous Learning
Welcome Back BRHS Tigers!
We are excited to welcome students back to Blue Ridge High School for the 2020-2021 school year. As we do this, we believe it is important to share detailed information about what to expect in order for each family to make an informed decision about whether to choose face-to-face or asynchronous (online) learning.
Please take a few minutes to watch the video below and read the provided information so that you can complete the attached commitment form.

BRHS Learning Options Overview
What will face-to-face learning look like?
While our goal is to make the face-to-face learning experience as normal as possible, it is going to look a little different for the 2020-2021 school year. Here are some highlights of the changes and procedures that we have put into place to increase student and staff health and safety at BRHS:
- Car-riders and walkers will enter and exit through either of the front entrances (main & library) after completing daily online health screening questionnaire and in-person temperature check (morning only)
- Bus-riders will enter and exit through the art/CTE hallway doors
- Students will report directly to 1st period upon arrival each morning
- Students who eat breakfast will be released one at a time to pick up grab & go breakfast and return to 1st period classroom
- Student lockers will not be used to allow for distancing in the hallways
- Classrooms with desks are distanced to the maximum extent possible and plexiglass shields will be used on tables and other locations when distancing is limited
- Desks will be wiped down by students at the end of each class
- Two lunch periods with students sitting in the cafeteria and gym for distancing
- Juniors and Seniors who meet requirements will be allowed off-campus lunch
- Masks are required for all students and staff, but every effort will be made to safely provide mask breaks each class period
- Students will use hand sanitizer upon entering and before leaving each class
- Students will not be allowed to share supplies, technology devices, or books

What will asynchronous (online) learning look like?
The BRISD district leadership team has worked tirelessly to create an asynchronous learning plan that provides rigorous instruction, creates opportunities for student collaboration, and ensures student support when needed. Below are some highlights of what this plan will include for BRHS students:
- HS students will work in an online learning platform for most core and CTE classes (see image below for more details)
- All classes will utilize a Learning Management System to serve as a central location for coursework and assignments (Google Classroom, Schoology)
- Students will be required to work online using a Chromebook or other internet-connected device, paper copies of work will not be provided
- Students will be required to be logged in and engaged during normal school hours and complete assignments/make progress daily in order to be counted present
- Students will not be able to work ahead in classes or complete a week's worth of work in one day.
- Students will have regular opportunities to collaborate with other students and their teacher
- Students may be required to participate in certain face-to-face activities (athletics, fine arts, certain CTE classes, labs, etc.) in order to receive credit
- Students may choose asynchronous learning and still participate in extracurricular activities, but they may be required to attend practices, workouts, and class periods in-person
- Students who receive services for special populations (special education, 504, ESL, dyslexia) will participate in virtual office hours with the appropriate teacher for assistance and intervention
- District assessments in ELAR, math, science, and social studies will still take place for asynchronous learners every six weeks
