Updates
The Warren Arts and Education Foundation received a generous donation of books from the Molina Foundation. The Molina Foundation is a national nonprofit organization focused on reducing disparities in access to education and health. This mission of WAEF is to empower students and educators and remove barriers to learning in support of the whole child. WAEF has been working tirelessly to sort and box all the donated books to distribute to our students and teachers. This past week, students of Lakeside received several books to take home. We hope your child enjoys the books and continues to develop the love of reading!
Fall in Love with Autumn”- Fall is almost here! What does that mean? Leaves change colors and fall quickly to the ground. Having said that, the Brookview PTA has a LIMITED number of trash bags available for you to purchase. This is NOT a fundraiser, it is simply this- we have leftover trash bags that we need to sell. All trash bags regardless of size will be sold for ONLY $10. They will only be sold on a first come first serve basis. Reach out directly to Mrs. Pinner if you are interested.

Warren students should be ready to change the world when they graduate and they will need the following six skills: Communication, Collaboration, Content Knowledge, Critical Thinking, Citizenship, and Resilience. Stay tuned for more information on these skills and dispositions.
Reminder from Previous Paw Print's:
- Attendance: For the 2020-2021 school year, Warren Township has transitioned to a new student information system called Synergy allowing our parents and caregivers to have improved access to school information through the parent portal called ParentVUE. We are aware that at his time some students’ attendance records are reflecting students are absent, when in fact they were present. This is mostly the case for our students who are attending school VIRTUALLY on application days or in the VIRTUAL opinion full-time. We want to assure you that teachers are keeping accurate attendance records and that we are working to correct attendance records for all our students.
- School District Publications/News Media Use. The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school. This may include your child's photo, your child's name or your child's work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child's achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify your child's school office in writing that you do not want this type of information released.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at 317-532-3053 or at jcoleman3@warren.k12.in.us if you have any questions about our upcoming school year. Know that we are diligently working to ensure a safe school environment for our students and staff. We have missed our students and families and look forward to reuniting with everyone during the 2020-2021 school year.

***Hi, this message is from Mr. Coleman, the proud principal of Brookview Elementary. I want to ensure that you have access to information about your child's school. Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning Emphasis
At Brookview Elementary, we want our students to be strong readers! There are 5 major components to reading. I will be sharing information on each of the 5 components of reading over the next several weeks. Let's start with fluency.
What Is Fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read "like you speak." Hudson, Lane, and Pullen define fluency this way: "Reading fluency is made up of at least three key elements: accurate reading of connected text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression." Non-fluent readers suffer in at least one of these aspects of reading: they make many mistakes, they read slowly, or they don't read with appropriate expression and phrasing.
Many researchers have found that fluency is highly correlated with reading comprehension—that is, when a student reads fluently, that student is likely to comprehend what he or she is reading.
So how do we teach it?
Teacher Modeling
Examples of teacher modeling include:
- Teacher-assisted reading
- Peer-assisted reading
- Audio-assisted reading
Key point: Teacher modeling involves more than just listening to someone else read. Students must be actively involved 100 percent of the time and in a multi-sensory way.
Parents, you play a major role here as well. Allowing your children consistent opportunities to read to you is key. Every night, have your children read to you. This helps your child become a strong reader!
WHO ARE WE?
At Brookview Elementary school, we strive to develop and enrich students to their full potential. One of the ways that we do this is by focusing on critical thinking, content knowledge, collaboration, citizenship, creativity, and resilience.
