ABERDEEN RACING ACADEMY
NEWSLETTER - June 2017 - No 2
Introduction
The Academy has had a busy month with our Optimist squad travelling backwards and forwards to the New Territories and Sai Kung for the Tai Mei Tuk Regatta followed by Hebe Haven's regatta. The Optimist squad's next event will be ABC's 50th Opening Regatta on the 9th and 10th September. Our 29er team has been training hard for their Summer overseas calendar which starts at the end of June in Kiel - Germany.
Tai Mei Tuk Regatta - Optimist Fleet
Overall our older members once again finished really well, Casey Law finished 7th Overall and won the 12 and under category. Juliette Clot finished 16th overall and came 2nd in the 12 and under category with Carter Stewart coming 3rd in the 10 and under Category at what was his first regatta. A great result once again for Casey and well done to Juliette and Carter.
Results from the event can be found here. http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/e5ed7c_48218b797cf64dad97d7b44a4227e06a.pdf
Hebe Haven Regatta - Optimist Fleet
Casey Law was the most consistent performer from the ARA for the weekend with a 9th Overall and 2nd in the Under 12 category. So far the results may not reflect the improvement and hard work 2 of our under 10 sailors Carter Stewart and Emily Polson have shown, the youngest sailors (at 8) in the fleet and at their 2nd regatta were regularly seen in the top half of the fleet.
Results for the event can be found here. http://www.hhyc.org.hk/page.php?page=page5_27.php&limit=1&fid=2288&id=2288
29er Worlds 2017, Long Beach - California
Saturday 3rd June saw ARA have their biggest fleet on the water for some time, exams are now drawing to a close and before the boats are packed onto the container we held a pre-worlds training session. With overcast conditions and good winds averaging at 10 knots it was a very successful session with 8 boats on the water.
2017 ARA 29er World Team
Yann D'argenlieu and Nathan Bradley
Yann and Nathan will be rejoining the Academy in Los Angeles, they have both been away from Hong Kong this year, studying in their own respective countries.
Incredibly, this will be their 5th worlds together, their first worlds was in 2013 in Aarhus. In 2014 they finished 19th in Kingston - Canada. In 2015 they finished 9th overall in Pwllheli - Wales. Last year they both travelled to the Netherlands and the boys came away with an 18th overall. I am sure they will be looking forward to getting back in the boat together and competing again.
This is Calum and Russell's 2nd 29er worlds together, although it will be Russell's 3rd 29er Worlds. Last year the boys placed 11th in the Silver Fleet, so they will be hoping to improve on this and rank well in the Gold fleet.
This will be Malo and Anatole's 2nd 29er Worlds, last year they competed in Medemblik Netherlands and placed 30th in the Bronze Fleet. Malo is 13 and Anatole 14 years old, both are students at the French International School. When asked what they would like to achieve from the worlds this year, Malo said "our main achievement is to have lots of fun while having some intense but great racing".
This is Lewis' first 29er worlds but Dylan's second. Both Lewis and Dylan are students at West Island School and are 14 years old. When asked what they would like to achieve this year, Lewis said "to finish every race and no black flags".
Karrie is our only female sailor this year and also our youngest (turning 13 just before the Worlds starts). Karrie is a year 8 student at West Island school. Karrie will only be sailing in the pre-worlds to enable her to gain as much experience as she can for the rest of the season ahead. When asking Karrie what her aims were for the regatta she said, "not to completely freak out and freeze"!
