Equity Evaluation Shared
Supporting Our Board Goal Focused on Strengthening a Sense of Belonging
In the spring of 2022, the district met with Elise Frattura and Colleen Capper to learn more about the work needed around Equity and Inclusivity. Their corporation, ICS (Integrated Comprehensive Systems for Equity), provides input into a systems approach to eliminate inequities. ICS is a research-based firm that provides a structured Framework and Process to shift from a deficit to a more proactive education system for all students. ICS addresses the entire range of inequities across race, ethnicity, social class, ability, gender, sexual/gender identity, and their intersections.
The district contracted with ICS to complete an equity evaluation for the 2022-23 school year. At last night’s Board of Education meeting, they summarized strengths and areas for growth. This evaluation informs the district’s continued work in reviewing and evolving its systems, its daily practices, the available materials/resources, and overall community engagement.
Integrated Comprehensive Systems summarized their evaluation and shared:
Strengths:
The District’s Inclusion Statement and Commitments
Welcoming Staff, Academic Reputation, and District Diversity
A Community that Embraces Change and Opportunity
“Fabulous Staff”
Administrative Support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Staff Willingness and Interest in District Equity Efforts

Opportunities to Enhance a Sense of Belonging:

Move from Conversation to Action
Take a Systemic Approach to Equity
Interest in More Consistent Communication in How to Handle Equity Issues
Eliminate Teasing, Harassment, Bullying; Ensure All Students Feel Seen and Heard; Increase Student Role in Equity Efforts

Integrate Equity Throughout the Curriculum
Draft 2023-24 Strategic Plan Reviewed
The Board reviewed the draft 2023-24 Strategic Plan that includes the following Board Goals:
Goal 1: Increase District 30’s capacity to systemically collaborate within grade-level teams to execute the cycle of continuous instructional improvement.
Goal 2: Strengthen a sense of belonging through diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts that foster positive climates across District 30.
Goal 3: Foster emotionally intelligent schools where students and staff feel safe to learn and perform at their best.
Willowbrook School Report
Dr. Carlson bragged about Willowbrook’s staff, students, and community during his report on all the school has accomplished this year! He highlighted Willowbrook’s "Shine Your Light" theme for the 2022-23 school year and shared several examples of students and staff doing just that.
The Beatles 3rd- and 4th-grade musical, student songs from the school's Artist in Residency, and authentic learning opportunities exemplified their theme. He also shared their work supporting Willowbrook’s target to support our Board Goals, including International Night; author visits from Tae Keller, discussing "Mihi Ever After," Kelly Yang talking about her new book "Finally Seen," and Francie Dekker with her picture book "Our World of Dumplings"; and professional learning cohorts to increase our capacity to teach all students.
Professional collaboration, specifically collaborative teaching and instructional planning, to support the growth of ALL learners was highlighted.
The Board thanked Dr. Carlson for his outstanding leadership and added their voice to a sincere appreciation for Willowbrook’s exceptional staff and students.
