The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of April 29 - May 3!
Message from the principal
This past Wednesday after school, a host of UHS students, staff, and community volunteers, helped celebrate the 5th anniversary of Silver Cord at Urbandale High School by conducting a meal packaging event through Meals from the Heartland! The Urbandale Silver Cord was started by volunteers from the Urbandale Community Action Network (UCAN) and members of the UHS faculty as a way to promote, track, and recognize volunteerism from our students. It is open to all UHS students. Each year, UHS students participating in the program give their time and talents to help others in the community. To date, UHS student have accounted for more than 30,000 hours as part of our Silver Cord program.
In total, the group of over 60 student volunteers not only raised funds but also packaged more than 20,000 meals that will be distributed to people in need.
Thank you go everyone who not only helped with event but also with many volunteer experiences that make up Silver Cord!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

UHS Battle of the Books teams take 1st and 3rd at State competition!!
Congratulations to the Guardians of the Library for winning 1st place in the 2019 Iowa High School Battle of the Books Competition. Over the past three years the Guardians have been holding the 2nd place racking against fierce Iowa high school competitors. The Bus Drivers also won 3rd place in the final Grand Battle and out performed all other Iowa teams in the qualifying rounds in March. Both UHS teams held the top two positions going into the final round, which is a testament to their dedication to battle of the books here at UHS.
The 2019 season began last September and teams have been working to read the 28 required titles and practice weekly as a team to ensure their success. Six book battling seniors will graduate this year: Lydia Burg, Lindsey Ingraham, Cole Janssen, Aditya Kotla, Anna Perdue, and Varun Vepa. The 2020 season will begin for interested upperclassmen in May. Any incoming freshmen are encouraged to join the ranks next fall.
UHS Hyperstream Cyber Defense team takes 2nd at IT Olympics at Iowa State University!
The UHS Hyperstream team earned 2nd place in only the second year of competing at the IT Olympics at ISU! They had to set up a network and then defend it from outside "hackers" trying to break in. Great work!!

NHS project "UHS Will Change the World!" student mural goes up!
In December, the UHS National Honor Society came up with the idea of hosting a student contest to design a mural that would tie our school vision "UHS will change the world!" by brightening and beautifying the hallways of UHS. Students submitted designs, and then students had the chance to vote on them. UHS junior, Lauren Jannsen, had the winning design, incorporating, "The sky is the limit," as well.
This week, her design went up on the wall NHS had selected to receive the design (a long stretch of wall between the industrial tech room and the lunchroom). It was a digital design that was then print and stuck to the wall like a sticker.
Great work to all involved! #UHSpride
