Some Color from the Art Department
Last week, MJ1 had the opportunity to host the Artist in Resident, Marina Lee. Ms. Lee is an artist from Milwaukee and has been doing residencies for over 20 years. She is an inspiring person full of creativity! She brought so much excitement, joy, engagement, and inspiration to our school.
Kindergarten through 8th grade students had the chance to work with Ms. Lee on a number of projects. Throughout the week, 21 stunning pieces were created! All projects were collaborative projects involving all grades. Some of the projects included large scale embellished paper mache birds, large embellished paper mache circles, peace poles, and framed fabric mandalas. The students were using a variety of materials. The pieces will take some time to dry, but will be displayed around the school to be a part of MJ1 forever. The students also had prep work before Ms. Lee arrived, that inspired all of the final pieces. It was such a great experience for all of our students. We will continue to invite more artists to MJ1 to continue with new, exciting experiences and inspirations for our students.

Counseling Corner
Do you want to help your child with homework but feel unsure how? You might not be able to help your tween do some of their homework anymore, but you can provide support. Here are a few things you can do. First, agree on a time and place for homework. Help your student get organized with a study space that is quiet and offers plenty of room to work. Help organize your tween’s schedule since middle school assignments often need to be managed over days or weeks.
Consider yourself one of your child’s teachers. While you may not be able to help with a math equation, you can provide encouragement, praise their hard work and help them think of specific questions to ask the teacher to get assistance.
