Understanding STAR Reports
STAR Renaissance scores play a crucial role in helping us understand how well our students are performing academically. It is helpful to understand the difference between district cut scores and state cut scores in Renaissance. Although based on the same percentile score, the cut scores are used for different purposes.
State cut scores are standardized benchmarks set by at the state level and attempt to predict future performance on the Wisconsin Forward Exam. The actual Scaled Score ranges for each proficiency level can be found in the link above.
Advanced > 94th percentile
Proficient - varies based on grade level and subject (approximately 68th through 94th percentile)
Basic - varies based on grade level and subject (approximately 36th - 67th percentile)
Below basic - varies based on grade level and subject < 36th percentile
District cut scores are specific to the local school district and may vary based on the district's unique goals and priorities. These scores are used to compare how students perform at the local level. These scores help us determine who might most benefit from intervention or enrichment.
On target - greater than or equal to the 40th percentile
On watch - 25th-39th percentile
Intervention - 10th-24th percentile
Urgent intervention - 1st-9th percentile
Your child will receive an email report that provides data we use for goal setting. Go to renaissance.com/star-scores to learn more about what all of these scores mean and how you can help your child succeed.

Bay View Literacy News
Setting reading goals halfway through the year is a great way to refocus and finish the year strong. Here are some tips for setting and achieving reading goals:
Take stock of the books you've already read this year.
Consider any reading challenges or goals you may have set at the beginning of the year.
Specify the number of books you want to read by the end of the year.
Consider setting goals for specific genres, authors, or themes you want to explore.
Include a variety of genres and formats to keep your reading experience diverse and engaging.
Explore books by authors from different backgrounds or cultures.
Break down your reading goal into smaller, manageable milestones.
Allocate dedicated time for reading each day or week.
Participate in a reading challenge or join a book club to stay motivated.
Discussing books with others can enhance your reading experience and provide recommendations.
Consider using reading apps or online platforms to track your progress.
Set reminders or notifications to help you stay on track with your reading schedule.
Challenge yourself to explore topics or genres you haven't delved into before.
This can broaden your reading horizons and introduce you to new perspectives.
Identify and eliminate potential distractions during your designated reading time.
Create a comfortable reading environment to enhance your focus.
Celebrate your achievements along the way. Consider rewarding yourself when you reach certain reading milestones.
Be flexible with your goals. If you find that your initial goals were too ambitious or not challenging enough, adjust them accordingly.
Remember that the most important aspect is to enjoy the process of reading. Setting realistic and achievable goals can help maintain your enthusiasm and motivation. Whether it's fiction, non-fiction, or a mix of both, find books that genuinely interest you and contribute to your overall reading enjoyment. Happy Reading!

DigiKnow: Safe and Effective Learning Environment
Ensuring a safe online environment is a shared responsibility. HSSD has filters in place to help prevent harmful or inappropriate material.
Students should not disable any security features on their iPads intentionally.
Report any inappropriate messages or behavior to staff. Students should let a staff member know if they are receiving any inappropriate messages, or messages that make them feel uncomfortable.
Never reveal names, addresses, phone numbers or passwords of yourself or other students, family members, or staff members while communicating online.
Cyberbullying is prohibited and includes, but is not limited to the following:
Posting slurs or rumors or their disparaging remarks
Sending email or instant messages that are mean or threatening
Using a camera on a device to take and send embarrassing photos or video
Posting misleading or fake photographs
Audio and video recording during instructional time should only be done at the direction of the teacher and for educational purposes only. If a student is recording another student or teacher, permission should be obtained first

Howard-Suamico Storm Breakers Pre-Competitive Swim Class
Does your child love to swim? Please consider the Howard-Suamico Storm Breakers (HSSB), the local, competitive club swim team!
There will be a two-week, pre-competitive swim class from March 4-14 (no class on March 7). This class is for prospective new swimmers interested in learning about competitive swimming. Swimmers should be level 3 or higher in swim lessons or should be able to swim the length of the pool without stopping or needing help. If your child is not level 3 or higher, they can be tested on the first day. Instructors will not be in the water with the swimmers.
If interested, please register here. The cost is $30. There are 24 spots available. The class will be held at the Howard-Suamico Community Pool (attached to Lineville Intermediate).
If your child is not able to register, but would still like to try out for HSSB, tryouts will be held on March 15 (time TBD). Any swimmer who does the two week pre-competitive class and would like to join the team does not need to try out.
If you have any questions, please reach out to head coach Connor Huff at huff.connor@gmail.com.

STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL
If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.
HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL
If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.
