Message from Jeff and Yolanda
As we get ready to welcome our students back after a two and half week break, it is important that we continue to focus on our theme for the year "Student Centric". While it is important to get back to normal and be fully functional as soon as possible, we have to realize that some of our colleagues and students may be in need of assistance to help them deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Our advisers and counselors will be visiting the tech areas and providing students with an opportunity to share their experiences while assessing the need for interventions. 9th and 10th grade language arts teachers will be facilitating a similar discussion in their classrooms. Keep in mind that some of the effects may not be immediately noticeable but may appear over time. If you notice any unusual patterns of student behavior make sure to reach out to the advisers/counselors.
On an another note, this week is Adult Education and Family Literacy week. The week is intended to raise awareness of the importance of adult literacy and how it intersects with almost every socioeconomic issue - parenting, health, workforce development and poverty. Adult education help break the cycles of intergenrational illiteracy and poverty by giving adult the skills they need to be successful as works and parents. Below are some interesting facts on the impact of adult education and literacy:
- A mother’s education level is the greatest determinant of her children’s future academic success, outweighing other factors such as neighborhood and family income.
- Children whose parents have low literacy levels have a 72% chance of being at the lowest reading levels (compared to 25% of children in the lowest reading level overall).
- Children with parents who hold professional jobs hear more than 33 million words by the time they begin school, compared with 10 million words for children from more disadvantaged groups.
In Collier County in addition to the robust day and evening programs at LWTC we have off campus sites at Career Source, Lely High School, Barron Collier High School, Golden Gate High School, Palmetto Ridge High School and iTech. Many of the students served through our Adult Education Program go on to earn their high school diploma and transition to the tech programs. Also many of the parents of our high school students are currently or were at some point enrolled in our Adult Education programs. Thank you to Ariel Pechokas and Bruce Rutila for the leadership to build quality programming.
We look forward to seeing all staff and students on Monday.
